Xinyu Baoshi Park

Built to commemorate Fu Baoshi, a master of traditional Chinese painting from Xinyu, Baoshi Park is located on Longhu Mountain at the western end of Jianshe Road in Xinyu, Jiangxi Province, 18 kilometers from Xiannv Lake, covering an area of 29.13 hectares. It is China's first park named after an artist and one of the key cultural facilities in Jiangxi Province. The design and layout aim to reflect Fu Baoshi’s refined and elegant artistic style. Guided by the principle of “rather leave out than include the ordinary,” the park emphasizes refinement in its scenery. It now features attractions such as the Fu Baoshi Exhibition Hall, East Gate, South Gate, Qinfeng Tower, Zuibi Tower, Baoshi Lake, Twin Pavilions Emerging from Water, Waterside Pavilion Contemplating Stone, Curved Corridor at Sunset, Sturdy Stone Pass, Three Smiles Bridge, Red Rain Bridge, Children’s Playground, Inviting Moon Pavilion, Fragrance-lingering Pavilion, Noble Spirit Pavilion, Fish Viewing Pond, Flower Nursery House, Revering Virtue Pavilion, Listening to Waves Pavilion, Chess Playing Pavilion, Pine Waves over Blue Sea, and Art Peak Pagoda, along with a 5,000-meter walking trail. The main gate archway on the east stands 13.5 meters tall and 30 meters wide, a three-bay, four-pillar, seven-story gate tower. The plaques on both the front and back feature the four golden characters “Bao Shi Gong Yuan” (Baoshi Park), inscribed by Zhao Puchu, then Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and President of the Buddhist Association of China. The left and right secondary bays display four porcelain paintings on their front and back plaques, imitating Fu Baoshi’s masterpieces “Spring,” “Summer,” “Autumn,” and “Winter.” The inscription “Bao Shi Gong Yuan” on the plaque of the south gate was handwritten by Wu Zuoren, then Chairman of the China Artists Association and Vice Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. Entering from the east gate and walking westward up the steps, you will come across a small hill topped with the highest pavilion in the park — Qinfeng Tower. This is a four-eave, hip-and-gable-roofed antique-style building, entirely modeled after the Kuixing Pavilion on Hukanshan Mountain. Due to its towering height, this scene is called “Lofty Pavilion Piercing the Sky.” On the first floor of the tower hang two plaques inscribed with the characters “Qin Feng” (Admire the Wind) by Tie Shan Yu, flanked by the shortest couplet in Xinyu: “Far-reaching benevolence embraces virtue; admire the virtuous and respect the refined.” Descending northwest from Qinfeng Tower and then ascending a gentle slope westward for about ten steps, you’ll find on the north side of the path a double-eave square pavilion — Erxiang Pavilion. It is designed based on the artistic concept of Fu Baoshi’s painting “Erxiang.” Beside the pavilion stand round sculptures of Ehuang and Nüying, the wives of Emperor Shun. Erxiang Pavilion stands in a lotus pond, connected to the shore by a winding plank bridge. Its plaque was inscribed by Lai Shaoqi, then Vice Chairman of the China Printmakers Association. The couplet reads: “Graceful lotus reflects the sunlight of Yao’s era; flowing silk drapes as Shun’s consorts arrive.” As the lotuses beside the pavilion exude fragrance in the sun, this scene is called “Lotus Reflecting the Sun.” Across from Erxiang Pavilion is a small garden structure — Tongyin Xiaxia (Enjoying Summer under the Paulownia Shade). As the name suggests, it’s an ideal spot to escape the summer heat. It uses iron pipes and lattices made to resemble bamboo fences, painted green, enclosing a flower bed and a two-tiered square pond with rockeries inside. At the innermost part is a reinforced concrete garden structure mimicking bamboo construction, designed in a T-shape. The scholar Shen Zuoyao from the China Association for Science and Technology wrote the couplet: “Under the paulownia shade we enjoy summer, phoenixes gather; in the pine pavilion we discuss poetry, unicorns roam.” Going north down from “Tongyin Xiaxia,” you can enter the Children’s Playground, which offers a rich variety of amusement facilities including a monkey house, swings, horse riding, skateboards, seesaws, swing boats, monkey-pulled carts, bumper cars, rocking machines, funhouse mirrors, electric carriages, Happy Ocean, and aerial arcade games.
