Fu Baoshi’s Former Residence is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Fu Baoshi is located in Zhangtang Village, Beigang, Luofang Town, Yushui District. It is a Qing Dynasty-style residential building. In February 1938, to escape the turmoil of war, Mr. Fu Baoshi came to his hometown with his wife, children, and elderly family members, residing here for as long as half a year.

Fu Baoshi’s Hometown, the birthplace of the renowned traditional Chinese painter and art master Fu Baoshi, is situated in Zhangtang Village, Beigang, Luofang Town, over 50 li east of Xinyu City. According to the [Fu Family Genealogy], “During the Xianfeng period of the Northern Song Dynasty, the Fu family migrated from Shitou in Qingjiang (now Zhangshu) to this place. Because the village was located by a pond and near a camphor tree, it was called Zhangtang, later shortened to Zhangtang.” Over the past centuries, through the hard work of the Fu ancestors, the current Zhangtang Village has become a picturesque rural landscape of clear mountains and beautiful waters. The prominent and noble “Fu Baoshi’s Hometown” archway is a source of pride for the villagers of Zhangtang.

Fu Baoshi’s works are widely renowned both in China and abroad. His paintings have repeatedly set new record prices in the Chinese painting and calligraphy market. In 1996, his piece “The Procession of Ladies” sold for 10.78 million yuan at China Guardian Auctions, setting the highest auction price for modern Chinese paintings. In November 2003, at the autumn auction held by Zhongmao Shengjia in Beijing, a set of Fu Baoshi’s “Poetic Landscapes of Mao Zedong” sold for 19.8 million yuan. This price not only broke the world auction record for Fu Baoshi’s artworks but also marked a new high for Chinese paintings and calligraphy in the mainland Chinese auction market.

Fu Baoshi (1904–1965), styled Qingyuan, with the family name Fu Zhongzhou, commonly known as Changsheng or Ruilin, was born in Zhangtang Village, Beigang Township, Yushui District, Xinyu City. His father, Fu Juhe, and mother, Madam Xu, lived in poverty and made a living by repairing umbrellas in Nanchang City.

Fu Baoshi was born in Nanchang in 1904 and started attending private school at the age of seven. In 1913, his father passed away, and life became extremely difficult. The family survived on the meager income his mother earned by repairing umbrellas during the day and doing laundry for others at night. Luofang Town: Luofang Town is located in the northeastern part of Xinyu City, at the junction of Xinyu, Zhangshu, Xingan, and Xiajiang. It borders Yaoxiu Town to the east, Shuixi Town to the west, Shuibei Town to the north, and Xiajiang and Xingan to the south. The town covers a total area of over 270 square kilometers, governs 36 village committees, one neighborhood committee, and 276 natural villages.
