From September 13 to 16, 1926, part of the Second and Third Armies of the Northern Expedition fought fierce battles against the Beiyang warlord Deng Ruzhuo’s forces in the Yangtiangang area. The Northern Expeditionary Army suffered an initial defeat but later achieved victory, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. Over 2,000 soldiers of the Northern Expedition died in this battle, and more than 200 local farmers from Xinyu also sacrificed their lives.

To honor the martyrs’ valor, in August 1929, Zhu Peide, chairman of Jiangxi Province, allocated funds to erect a monument inscribed with the words: “Monument to the Fallen Soldiers of the Third Army of the National Revolutionary Army in the Battle of Xinyu.” A bayonet was sculpted at the top. The Xinyu Municipal Government has now designated the western side of Yangtiangang as a martyrs' cemetery, reconstructing the martyrs' memorial monument, the martyrs' cemetery, and four pavilions commemorating the Northern Expedition, the Red Army, the War of Resistance, and the Liberation, making it a base for revolutionary tradition education among youths.
