Wan'an Zhusheng Pagoda

Wan'an Zhusheng Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuqing City.

Built in the 27th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1599 AD) through donations by Liu Xia, an officer of the Wan'an Garrison, and others, it is part of the Zhusheng Temple within the Wan'an Garrison City.

The Zhusheng Pagoda has an octagonal floor plan, is built in the 0-style using granite, and stands seven stories tall at 18 meters high. The base features lotus and lion reliefs, and two tower guardian statues face the sea. The inner walls of the pagoda are carved with various granite arhat reliefs; inside, stone steps lead upward, and a zigzag (“乙”-shaped) staircase allows ascent to the top. Starting from the second floor, each level is inlaid with one arhat relief. There are gaps in the railings on the fourth and fifth floors, and the northwest side of the pagoda is covered with bullet marks. At the southeastern shore of the pagoda stands a stele pavilion containing a two-meter-tall stele with an inscription in intaglio seal script. Faintly visible is the text “Ming Dynasty Liu Hou’s Pagoda Construction Stele Inscription,” though the wording has become largely illegible.

In the late 1930s, Japanese warships bombarded the stone pagoda during their invasion of China. To this day, the northwest side of the pagoda remains riddled with bullet holes, and there are gaps in the railings on the fourth and fifth floors.

In 1981, the Zhusheng Pagoda was designated as a cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Fuqing City.
