Yingqian New Street

Located in Yingqian Subdistrict, Changle City, it was part of the "Yingqian Model Village," a model rural community created between 1928 and 1933 by Huang Zhanyun, a pioneer of the 1911 Revolution in Fujian and then-director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Industry. Only 38 structures remain today.

In 1929, Huang Zhanyun led farmers in transforming the Min River mudflats by driving wooden piles and filling in earth — without using an inch of farmland — to construct a major road. Along the road, uniform two-story shop buildings were erected, forming a brand-new commercial street known as "Yingqian New Street."

The architecture of the new street features arcade-style buildings — gray-brick structures with small alleys every ten shops to facilitate traffic and fire safety. The roofs of the arcades are all connected by shared platforms, and every two households share a semi-open pavilion that serves as access to the rooftop platform. There are also covered walkways in front of the shops for protection against rain. In addition to shops, the area included a post office, customs house, and other service facilities.

Huang Zhanyun’s original intention in building the “New Street” was to exchange each arcade structure with landlords and gentry for land, which would then be redistributed free of charge to extremely poor farmers — in order to realize Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s ideal of “land to the tiller.” As the commercial street was completed and numerous shops opened, a relatively complete commercial network gradually took shape, facilitating smooth trade and bringing prosperity to the market.

In 2003, Yingqian New Street was designated as a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Changle.

Yingqian Subdistrict: Yingqian Subdistrict is located in the western part of Changle City, facing Mawei District across the river. It is 7 kilometers from the city center, covers an area of 31.56 square kilometers, and had a population of 35,400 in 2004. It administers 3 neighborhood committees and 9 administrative villages. The subdistrict office is located at No. 82, Lianhe Li, Yingqian Neighborhood Committee. The deep-water area of Baiyantan serves as an anchorage for 10,000-ton ships and has a container terminal.
