Tingping Taishan Bridge

Tingping Taishan Bridge is a cultural heritage site protected by Minhou County.

Taishan Bridge is located in Houxi Village, Tingping Township, and serves as a vital crossing for nearby townships heading to Luoyuan County. It is speculated that the bridge was named after the ancient temple “Taishan Temple” at its entrance.

The original construction date of the bridge is unknown. According to legend, it was initially a vine bridge that was later destroyed, prompting villagers to rebuild it as a covered bridge on the same site. The current structure was reconstructed in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933 AD). The carpenter was Yu Tianchun from Shangxiang on the ancient road in Guyi (now Lushang Village, Hetang Town, Gutian).

The bridge is a single-arch wooden covered bridge, oriented from east to west, with a total length of 28.4 meters, a width of 4.3 meters, an arch span of 21.6 meters, and about 12 meters above the water surface. The bridge abutments are built on natural rock foundations using block stones. Multiple sets of arch frames are formed by interlocking round logs, with round logs laid horizontally as beams and wooden planks laid crosswise to form the bridge deck.

The bridge house features a flush gable roof, with seven bays, a nine-purlin and four-pillar post-and-lintel wooden frame, and no dougong (bracket sets). Several sections of ink inscriptions remain on the main roof beam, including: “Reconstructed on the auspicious day of the Jiaxu month in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), the year of Guisui” and “Constructed by Yu Tianchun, a carpenter from Shangxiang in Guyi, Guyi Township.” The sides of the bridge are equipped with wooden railings, along with rain shields. Inside the bridge house is a shrine dedicated to the Dark Heavenly Emperor (Xuanwu).

At the western end of the bridge is Taishan Temple, which primarily enshrines the Eastern Peak Mountain God (Dongyue Taishan Shen).

Tingping Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Minhou County. Established as Tingping Commune in 1958 and reorganized as a township in 1984. Located in the northern part of the county, it is 41.5 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 217 square kilometers with a population of 33,000, it is traversed by the Fu-Gu Highway. The township administers 25 village committees: Tingping, Hongshan, Xishan, Yantou, Xiayang, Wenshangang, Macuo, Huangpu, Xikeng, Chikeng, Panling, Shijing, Chikeng, Xiping, Shiyang, Caodi, Liuyuan, Houxi, Jiaoxi, Luoqiao, Shikeng, Weiqiao, Guangping, Tangli, and Wenhe. The main agricultural products are rice, and the area is rich in timber.
