Qingzhi Mountain Banshan Pavilion

Banshan Pavilion on Qingzhi Mountain is a cultural heritage site protected by Lianjiang County.

Banshan Pavilion is situated just to the right of the Monument to Soldiers Fallen in the War of Resistance, nestled among banyan trees. Facing south with an open view toward the Min River, it offers a cool retreat even on the hottest summer days.

The pavilion is built with reinforced concrete, featuring a rectangular floor plan, four columns, and a gently sloping hip-and-gable roof. The plaque inscribed with the name “Banshan Pavilion” was penned by the Qing Dynasty Grand Tutor Chen Baochen at the request of Lin Huanzhang. An couplet is engraved on the front pillars, composed by the esteemed Mr. Chen Yanchao, which reads: “Lotus peaks rise in wondrous display, rejoicing in a hundred caverns piled one atop the other, where one may now shake dust from their robes at the summit; the Tiger Gate retains traces of ancient battles, lamenting the surging river’s ceaseless flow—yet who now strikes the oar amid the currents?”

Qingzhi Temple is said to have been originally built during the Tang Dynasty, originally located at Baxian Rock. In the 40th year of the Wanli reign (1612 AD), Dong Yingju developed the landscape of Qingzhi Mountain and relocated the temple to its current site. Banshan Pavilion served as a rest stop along the path to the temple and was likely constructed around the same time, originally taking the form of a square wooden pavilion.

In the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933 AD), the 19th Route Army stationed in Fujian launched a political upheaval. The following year, Lin Sen, then Chairman of the Nationalist Government, returned to Fujian to mediate the conflict and stayed at his former residence on Qingzhi Mountain. He funded the reconstruction of the pavilion, transforming it into a square structure made of reinforced concrete.

After its reconstruction, Banshan Pavilion continued to serve as a rest pavilion along the path, becoming one of the key scenic spots on Qingzhi Mountain.
