Haikou Mincheng Tongjiang Gate

Haikou Mincheng Tongjiang Gate is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuqing City.

Tongjiang Gate is located on the old street to the southeast of Haikou Town, facing southwest. The gate is about four meters high, with an opening about 2.50 meters high.

According to records, the Haikou Mincheng stretched over 2,800 meters in total, forming an irregular circle. The city wall featured seven enemy watchtowers, 24 guard posts, 1,605 crenels, and a total of five gates. The west gate was called Qilong Gate, with the plaque “Fengyun Huihe”; the southwest gate was Tongjiang Gate, with the plaque “Chengjiang Ru Lian” (The River Clear as Silk); the south gate was Zhuogui Gate, with the plaque “Yu Ri Tian Xiang” (Bathing in the Sun’s Fragrance); the north gate was Zhen’an Gate, with the plaque “Qiao Yue Zhong Ling” (The Lofty Mountains Gather Spirit); the northwest gate was Jiayou Gate, with the plaque “Shi Zhuang Pu Che” (Majestic Momentum for Carriages). Now only an 8-meter section of Tongjiang Gate remains.

In the 36th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1557 AD), to defend against Japanese invasions, with approval from imperial censor Guo Jicheng, construction was initiated under the leadership of local resident Su Youshi. The project was completed in the summer of the 39th year of the Jiajing reign (1560 AD).

During the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, the Haikou Mincheng underwent four rounds of repairs.

In the 27th year of the Republic of China (1938 AD), to meet wartime needs during the War of Resistance against Japan, the Republican government ordered the demolition of the city walls. The Haikou City was destroyed, leaving only Tongjiang Gate.

In November 1987, Tongjiang Gate was designated as part of the second batch of county-level key cultural relic protection units of Fuqing County.

Haikou Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Fuqing City. Established as the Haikou Commune in 1958 and restructured as a town in 1984. It is located in the eastern part of the city, at the mouth of the Longjiang River, bordering Fuqing Bay to the southeast, and is 9 kilometers from the city center.
