Chongsha Christian Church

Chongsha Christian Church is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuzhou City.

Chongsha Christian Church is located at No. 17 Wentong Lane, Chongsha, covering an area of over 1,000 square meters. The building is made of red bricks, with a single story and a basement. Its façade is designed in the British Victorian Gothic architectural style (a form of Romantic architecture). The front of the church faces east, and the main part is the worship hall, featuring a basilica Latin cross layout that can accommodate 1,000 worshippers. It has a wooden truss roof and is covered with small blue tiles.

The main façade of the church faces west, consisting of three bays. The central bay appears two-storied: the first floor has a stone pointed arch door, above which is a stone plaque inscribed with “Christian Church”; the second floor has three connected pointed arch windows without a rose window; above that is a simple gable with a cross at the apex. The side bays are three-story towers, with each visible wall surface featuring triple Gothic pointed arch windows.

Beneath the worship hall is a British-style basement; the eastern section (before the transept arms) has stone walls, while the western section has brick walls. The lower left corner of the front façade embeds a foundation stone plaque inscribed with “Glory to God · Foundation laid on All Saints’ Day, November 1, 1924, by Bishop John.” There are also inscriptions such as “Show Me the Way.” The roof was modified later; old photos show that the original roof had a British hammerbeam truss.

Chongsha Christian Church is one of the existing churches in the Fuzhou area that features typical British architectural style, is relatively large in scale, and is well preserved. It has been listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Taijiang District.

In January 2020, it was announced as part of the eighth batch of municipal-level cultural relic protection units.
