Temple of Minister Chen Wenlong

The Temple of Minister Chen Wenlong is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuzhou City.

The Temple of Minister Chen Wenlong is located on Wumei Lane, Houzhou, Taijiang District, Fuzhou City. It faces south with a northern orientation, features a double-sloped roof, and is enclosed by a fireproof wall. The main gate bears the horizontal plaque “Imperially Commissioned Minister of Water Works,” while the smaller side gates are inscribed with “Uphold Loyalty” and “Follow Righteousness.” The stone at the base of the wall is engraved with the text: “The stone foundation of the entire structure was donated and constructed in the tenth year of the Republic of China by the East and West Societies.” The hall is five bays wide, seven pillars deep, and 6.50 meters high, covering an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. The stone pillars at the front of the ancestral hall feature a couplet handwritten by Lin Zexu: “As the guardian of the homeland, even when the crumbling situation of the Jingyan era could hardly be sustained, your undying loyalty was recorded in history; your spirit shines over the maritime region, standing equal to the renowned loyalty of the Faithful Lord, bringing peace to the ten isles under divine protection.” The east and west walls also bear stone inscriptions from the Jiaqing and Daoguang eras documenting donations for temple repairs. The caisson ceiling of the stage was relocated from the Ningde Guild Hall.

Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, it is a memorial temple dedicated to the loyal hero Chen Wenlong who resisted the Yuan Dynasty. It was “ordered by imperial decree to be rebuilt” during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. It underwent renovation again in the tenth year of the Republic of China (1921 AD).

After 1949, the Minister Temple was taken over and occupied by the government.

In 1986, during the comprehensive redevelopment of Dajiang Road, the Minister Temple was converted into a department store.

It was designated as a district-level cultural relic protection unit in 1988.

Its eastern boundary is the central line of Yingzhou River on Wuyi South Road; the southern boundary is the central line of the main channel of the Min River; the western boundary extends southward from Tongtai Bridge along Baima South Road to Xiadian Road; the northern boundary runs westward from Bayi 7th Middle Road along Xuejun Road, then turns north to connect Yangzhong Road up to Niaolong. Fuzhou Metro Line 1's Dadao Station is situated within the subdistrict. The Houzhou Subdistrict has been integrated into six community committees: Zhongting Street, Tonghui, Tianhua, Shuixiang, Shangxiadian, and Tingzhou.
