The Former Site of the St. Luke’s Hospital on Mawei Mountain is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuzhou City.

Mawei St. Luke’s Hospital

Located at the southwestern foot of Mawei Mountain in Mawei District, it includes a hospital outpatient building and a residence for the hospital director. Established in the 27th year of the Guangxu reign (1901) by the Church Missionary Society of the Anglican Church in Britain.

The hospital was initially headed by Dr. May, the British vice-consul in Fuzhou. Until the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), when the British Anglican Church withdrew from Mawei and handed over the hospital to the Chang Le Diocese of the Fujian Central Association of the Church of Christ in China. The hospital was then managed by Rev. Francis H. Baker, a medical missionary of the American Methodist Episcopal Mission stationed in Fuzhou. Rev. Baker also served as the head of the Chang Le District of the church.

Protected area: to the east up to the Martyrs’ Cemetery of the Sino-French War at Mawei, to the west up to the buildings on the west side of the three structures in Mei Yuan, to the south up to Zhaogong Road, and to the north up to the Mawei Shipyard substation.
