Dengwendao Wharf is a cultural heritage site protected by Fuzhou City.

Dengwendao Wharf

Located on the northern seashore of Wenshi Village, Tan Tou Town, Changle City, it was the landing site used by Zheng He when he came to Changle to build the Tianfei Temple.

The wharf is paved with strip stones, approximately 99.73 meters long and up to 3.44 meters wide at its broadest point.

Dengwendao Wharf was also the departure point for ancient Changle merchants embarking on ocean voyages, and the starting harbor for local scholars going to the capital to take imperial exams. When scholars passed the exams and returned home, they would donate a stone slab engraved with their names — this is the origin of the name “Dengwendao Wharf.”

Wenshi Village: Wenshi Village

Wenshi Village is situated at the prominent southern bank of the Min River estuary, overlooking the sea with a winding terrain. When the tide flows, waves converge from all directions; when the land stands, six hills encircle the area in beauty — namely: Horse Mountain, Ox Mountain, Dragon Mountain, Leopard Mountain, Snake Mountain, and Lion Mountain. Horse Mountain juts out into the river mouth and was once a key coastal defense fortress, where the Wenshi Fort was built. It also served as the port where envoys of the Ming and Qing dynasties set sail for countries such as Ryukyu, conducting ceremonies to worship the sea before departure. Historically, Wenshi was a very prosperous village, once one of the wealthiest areas. The village is traversed by Provincial Highway 201, located more than 20 kilometers from the county seat and 1.5 kilometers from the town government.
