Qichuan Well
Qichuan Well is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuzhou City.
Qichuan Well is located at Jingloumen in Gulou District, Fuzhou City. The well is circular, with a diameter of 4.10 meters and a depth of 8.40 meters. The wellhead is covered by four large stone slabs, with seven well openings carved between the gaps of the slabs—hence the name Qichuan (Seven-Pierced) Well. However, according to local folklore, it is associated with the goddess Linshui Niangniang beheading a snake demon, throwing it into the well, and then erecting a pagoda to suppress it. As a result, it was mistakenly named "Qixing (Seven-Star) Well." Currently, two stone steeple carvings from the late Tang and early Five Dynasties periods remain beside the well. Locals call them "stone candles" and they may be remnants of the ancient Kaiyuan Temple. A Qixing Well Temple Pavilion (Qixing Well Linshui Palace) has been built over the well, covering an area of more than 300 square meters.
In the early 1980s, during the renovation of Xianta Street, the site of Jingloumen was discovered beneath the road surface of Well Avenue, and stone thresholds and other artifacts were unearthed.
After the street renovation, the site was developed for real estate. The developer built a two-story building next to the well, with shops on the ground floor and the neighborhood committee using the upper floor. Later, nearby residents built a shrine on the back side of the building, dedicated to deities such as Linshui Chen Taihou, known as the "Three Mothers." As the worship grew in popularity, an iron shed was erected, featuring dragon pillars and phoenix gate beasts.
It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit in 1992.
