Former Residence of Fang Shengdong

The former residence of Fang Shengdong is a cultural heritage site protected by Fuzhou City.

The former residence of Fang Shengdong is located at No. 16, Jiucailane, inside Beida Road.

The residence was originally composed of two connected courtyards, facing south with a north orientation, covering an area of about 3,600 square meters. The main gate once displayed a plaque inscribed with “朝元” (Chaoyuan), awarded in the 18th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1892). The entrance house and the first courtyard, which are three bays wide and seven pillars deep, still preserve their original structure. The flower hall, fish pond, and second courtyard have all been rebuilt. Only the first courtyard remains today.

Fang Shengdong (1886–1911), styled Ziming, was a native of Houguan County (now downtown Fuzhou). In the 28th year of the Guangxu reign (1902), he traveled to Japan and enrolled at the Seijo Army Academy in Tokyo. The following year, he joined the “Anti-Russian Volunteer Army.” In the 31st year of Guangxu (1905), he became one of the founding members of the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance (Tongmenghui) established by Sun Yat-sen in Tokyo. Soon after, he returned to Fuzhou and founded a reading room for books and newspapers to promote revolutionary ideas.
