Ruins of the Yongli Emperor’s Temporary Palace

The ruins of the Yongli Emperor’s temporary palace are a cultural heritage site protected by Fuzhou Municipality.

The ruins of the Yongli Emperor’s temporary palace are located within Tonghu New Village at No. 137–139 Guxi Road. Only ruins, dilapidated houses, and a fragment of a wall remain today.

In June of the first year of the Hongguang era (the second year of the Shunzhi era in the Qing dynasty, 1645 AD), the Qing army captured Nanjing, and the Prince of Fu perished. Ming officials such as Huang Daozhou and the surrendered pirate Zheng Zhilong, among others, enthroned Zhu Yujian, the eighth-generation descendant of the Prince of Tang, as emperor in Fuzhou, establishing the reign title “Yongli.” They used the residence of the Prince of Nan’an as the temporary palace, converted the Provincial Administration Commission into an imperial audience hall, and built a traveling Imperial Ancestral Temple, the Altars of Land and Grain, and the Temple of the Tang State. Fuzhou was elevated to Tianxing Prefecture, Fujian Province was renamed Fùjīng (“Fortunate Capital”), making it the third capital of the Great Ming, alongside Nanjing (Yingtian Prefecture) and Beijing (Shuntian Prefecture).

In the second year of the Yongli era (the third year of the Shunzhi era in the Qing dynasty, 1646 AD), due to the betrayal of the surrendered pirate Zheng Zhilong, Fùjīng fell, and the Yongli Emperor was captured in Tingzhou—where he died.

In September of the third year of the Yongli era (the fourth year of the Shunzhi era in the Qing dynasty, 1647 AD), an uprising occurred in Zhang Huashan, Huai’an, which still used the Yongli calendar.

After Zheng Zhilong’s betrayal, his son Zheng Sen (later known as Zheng Chenggong) broke with his father and continued to resist the Qing, still using the Yongli calendar until the fifth year of the Yongli era (the third year of the Yongli era / fourth year of the Shunzhi era in the Qing dynasty, 1647 AD).

In 1992, the Yongli Emperor’s Temporary Palace was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site in Fuzhou.

Gulou West Subdistrict: Gulou West Subdistrict

Located in the western part of Gulou District, it stretches from Shuangpaoqiao on Yangqiao Road in the east, bordering Nanjie Subdistrict, to the Fuzhou Infectious Disease Hospital on Xihong Road in the west, adjacent to Hongshan Town. To the south, it reaches Yangqiao Middle Road, bordering Nanjie Subdistrict, and extends north to the northern side of Fuzhou West Lake Park, neighboring Huada Subdistrict. It covers an area of 2.5 square kilometers with a population of approximately 40,000. The subdistrict office is located at No. 17 Baima North Road.
