Liankui Pagoda
Liankui Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.
Liankui Pagoda is located on Tashan Mountain south of Yongtai County. It is a stone-structured pavilion-style pagoda, octagonal in shape with seven stories, and stands 21 meters tall. The pagoda sits atop a stepped stone base, each side measuring 20.05 meters, surrounded by railings. At the entrance of the ground floor, a stone-carved pagoda deity (dressed as a civil official) stands guard. The pagoda body tapers with each ascending level, and each story is equipped with a balcony railing. The outer walls feature niches, each housing a stone-carved Buddha statue. Inside the pagoda, a spiral stone staircase leads directly to the top, where a gourd-shaped finial crowns the structure.
The Yongfu County Annals from the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era recorded: “In the second year of the Kaibao reign of the Song Dynasty (969 AD), a temple was built on Yuefeng Mountain. The morning bells and evening drums resonated with the county’s timekeeping system, and a bridge was constructed to extend the dragon vein of Xishan Mountain. A pagoda was erected at the water outlet in the southeast to correspond with the dragon and elephant symbols, leading to a flourishing of culture and a continuous succession of successful imperial examination candidates…” In the second (1166 AD), fifth (1169 AD), and eighth (1172 AD) years of the Qiandao reign, Xiao Guoliang, Zheng Qiao, and Huang Ding — all from Yongfu County — successively achieved the top rank in the imperial examinations, causing a sensation throughout the court and populace and becoming a celebrated tale.
In the 28th year of the Zhiyuan reign of the Yuan Dynasty (1368 AD), the pagoda was destroyed;
In the 11th year of the Daoguang reign (1831 AD), Magistrate Bao Ganchen renovated the Confucius Temple and the Sanyuan Shrine. The remaining funds were used to construct a seven-story stone pagoda, named “Liankui Pagoda,” in commemoration of the “three consecutive top imperial examination rankings” — a remarkable feat.
In 1982, Liankui Pagoda was designated as a county-level cultural relic protection unit.
In 1986, Liankui Pagoda underwent renovation.
In 1987, the Yongtai County government invested 900,000 yuan to build “Liankui Park,” incorporating the pagoda into the park.
In 2010, the first phase of the expansion project of Liankui Park, where Liankui Pagoda is located, was completed and opened to visitors during the Spring Festival.
In 2012, Liankui Pagoda and Sanyuan Shrine were jointly designated as provincial-level cultural relic protection units of Fujian Province.
