Former Residence of the Russian Consul in Fuzhou

The former residence of the Russian Consul in Fuzhou is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The former residence of the Russian Consul in Fuzhou is located at No. 39 Gongyuan Road, Cangshan District, within Fuzhou Foreign Languages School (formerly Trinity College), and once served as the consul’s residence for the Russian Consulate in Fuzhou during the Qing Dynasty. In the first year of the Republic of China (1911), it was sold to the Trinity College of the Anglican Church. In 1996, it was restored with donations from alumni of the former Ninth Middle School and used as an alumni activity venue. The building is generally well preserved, but during the restoration, the original Russian-style wooden porch was mistakenly demolished and replaced with a replica of the porch from the nearby "Bihan Building" (which had been demolished), which was then reconstructed in reinforced concrete.

In the first year of the Republic of China (1911), the building was sold to Trinity College (now Fuzhou Foreign Languages School) for use as school premises. Trinity College renamed the former office building of the Russian Consulate in Fuzhou as the "Second Floor," and constructed a number of new buildings on campus.

In 1952, Trinity College was taken over by the government and renamed Fuzhou Ninth Middle School, with the school still located on Gongyuan Road. At least until 1993, the appearance of the former residence of the Russian Consul in Fuzhou remained intact, with no damage.

In 1996, the user of this building was the Alumni Association of Fuzhou Ninth Middle School. That year, the alumni association organized donations from alumni to renovate the building under the guise of “restoration.” Due to the lack of familiarity with the historical environment of the campus by the person in charge (possibly not an alumnus but a school staff member), coupled with carelessness—even failing to notice significant differences such as the building's floor plan—the building was mistakenly identified as another structure — the former office building of the Russian Consulate in Fuzhou, which had already been renamed the “Bihan Building.” This led to the demolition of the originally well-preserved Russian-style wooden porch, which was replaced with a crude British-style concrete porch.

In 2006, the former residence of the Russian Consul in Fuzhou was designated as a cultural heritage site protected at the district level in Cangshan District.

In 2013, it was listed as a provincial-level cultural heritage site as part of the “Yantai Mountain Modern Architectural Complex.” Source
