Shangshu Ancestral Temple of Yangqi
The Shangshu Ancestral Temple of Yangqi is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.
The Shangshu Ancestral Temple of Yangqi is located at the southern foot of Fengming Mountain in Shangqi Village, Gaishan Town, Cangshan District. It was built in the seventh year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1627), originally as Fengming Temple. In the ninth year of the Republic of China (1920), Yan Fu initiated its reconstruction and converted it into the “Shangshu Ancestral Temple” in honor of the Southern Song national hero Chen Wenlong. The temple complex covers an area of 3,805 square meters and is composed of three main structures: the main hall of the Shangshu Ancestral Temple, the Yulin Palace, and the Zhongsu Shrine. The Yulin Palace once completely collapsed, and the Zhongsu Shrine was previously a factory, but both have now been restored. The ancestral temple features fire-preventing gable walls, with a plaque inscribed by Yan Fu above the gate. Inside are stone couplets written by notable figures such as Chen Baochen, Zheng Xiaoxu, Li Houji, Ye Daqing, and Wang Renkan. The temple enshrines the Southern Song patriotic martyr Chen Wenlong. The layout includes a stage, caisson ceiling, worship hall, central courtyard, and main hall. The second and third main sections each have three bays in width and five pillars in depth, with stone columns and wooden beams, and a combination of raised-beam and through-tenon construction. To the east is the Minlin Palace, consisting of a courtyard, tavern, Sanbao Hall, Yulin Palace, and Guanyin Hall. The second and third main sections each have three bays in width and five pillars in depth, with stone columns and wooden beams, and a combination of raised-beam and through-tenon construction. To the west is the Zhongsu Shrine, which includes a screen door, corridor, courtyard, front hall, and Xingle Palace. The corridor features pavilion-style bell and drum towers, and the front hall and Xingle Palace each have three bays in width and five pillars in depth, with stone columns and wooden beams, and a combination of raised-beam and through-tenon construction. In front of the main shrine, there are two stele pavilions on the temple square, featuring double-eave hip-and-gable roofs with twelve pillars on each of the four corners. The left pavilion houses eight original Qing Dynasty steles commemorating renovations, while the right one contains replicated steles of renovations. The Shangshu Ancestral Temple of Yangqi is the first ancestral temple in the Fuzhou area and was historically known for events such as the “Shangshu Going to Sea” and “Universal Salvation” ceremonies.
It was designated as a district-level cultural relic protection unit in December 1992 and was announced as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in 2009.
