Longgao Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Stone Monument

The Longgao Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Stone Monument is a Fuqing Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a classic red tourism site.

The Longgao Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Monument is located in the park of Gaoshan Village, Gaoshan Town, Fuqing City.

In 1947, the Fuqing County Committee of the CCP and its three district committees—Longgao, Dongzhang, and Guankou—mobilized the masses, organized armed forces, and prepared to launch a self-defense guerrilla war, using the Dongzhang Lingshi Mountain base as the command center of the Urban Work Department of the CCP Min-Zhe-Jian Border Region Committee. In April, the Longgao District Committee gathered armed personnel in preparation to attack Gaoshan Town, but the operation was aborted due to a communication error. After the failure of the Longgao armed uprising, the Nationalist Party’s security forces carried out a “cleansing” operation in the Gaoshan area and Lingshi Mountain, arresting and executing a large number of Communist guerrillas. Over 100 Communist Party members and guerrillas were captured by the Nationalist security forces across the county, and more than 50 were killed, severely weakening Fuqing’s revolutionary forces.

To commemorate the 1947 Longgao Uprising and the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Longgao area, the Fuqing County Committee of the CCP and the Fuqing County People’s Government erected this monument in July 1957. The monument covers an area of 240 square meters and faces south. The main body of the monument is prism-shaped, standing 8 meters tall with a five-pointed star at the top. The front is inscribed with “Longgao Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Monument.” The base is rectangular, measuring 2.74 meters in length, 2.42 meters in width, and 3.2 meters in height. The front of the base lists the names of 76 Longgao revolutionary martyrs. The back of the base bears an inscription from the Fuqing County Committee of the CCP: “They gave their lives for communism and the liberation of humanity, and we will forever remember them.” The left side of the base features an inscription from the Fuqing County People’s Committee: “Carry forward the glorious traditions of the martyrs and strive to build socialism.” The right side of the base carries an inscription from the Gaoshan District Committee of the CCP and the Gaoshan District Office: “The martyrs live on forever, their spirit enduring through the ages.”

The Longgao Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Monument was designated as a Fuqing County Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the Fuqing County People’s Government in February 1981, and as a Fuqing Municipal Youth Moral Education Base by the Fuqing Municipal Committee of the CCP and the Fuqing Municipal People’s Government in April 2002.
