Martyrs' Cemetery of Yu Changyue

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Yu Changyue is a cultural relics protection unit of Fuqing City and a classic red tourism attraction.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Yu Changyue is located on the northwest slope of Tongziping Mountain, east of Yangxia Village, Yangxia Subdistrict, Fuqing City.

Yu Changyue, the martyr, was born on October 18, 1918, in Yangxia Village, Fuqing County. He joined the revolution in 1931, became a member of the Communist Party of China in 1932, and once held positions such as the Fuqing Special Commissioner of the Fujian People's Government, the Secretary of the Fuqing County Communist Youth League, and a member of the Central Committee of the Minzhong Special Committee of the CPC. In 1934, he led the "Nanxiting" uprising with Chen Jinlai, Chen Bingkui, and others, fighting against local tyrants and landlords. On February 16, 1937, he was arrested in Putian due to a traitor’s betrayal and was imprisoned in Fuzhou, where he displayed bravery and resilience. On June 23, 1937, Yu Changyue, along with Wang Yujie, Chen Bingkui, Huang Xiaomin, and Chen Rufang, were taken to the execution ground by the enemy and were executed heroically. At the time, Yu Changyue was not yet 19 years old.

In 1940, underground CPC members buried the remains of Yu Changyue in the Yang of Dashiping on Yangxia Mountain. The small grave covered only six square meters. In April 1984, Yu family brothers residing in Singapore, seeing the small grave overgrown with weeds, generously donated funds. With the support of the Fuqing County Committee of the CPC, the Fuqing County Civil Affairs Bureau, the Yangxia People's Commune, and the Yangxia Brigade, a memorial monument was built at the entrance of Yangxia Village, covering an area of about 60 square meters, and the martyr’s remains were reinterred there. Cheng Xu, then Deputy Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee, personally attended the unveiling ceremony.

Later, due to road expansion, the cemetery was rebuilt in 1998 on the hillside east of Yangxia Subdistrict, covering an area of about 1,200 square meters and facing Shizhu Mountain. The monument is six meters high, with eight red clerical-style characters on the front that read “Monument to Martyr Yu Changyue.” The base of the monument engraves a brief revolutionary history of the martyr. On the right side is an inscription by Cheng Xu: “Inherit the martyrs’ will, strive to revitalize China.” Behind the monument lies the symbolic tomb of the martyr.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Yu Changyue was designated as a cultural relics protection unit of Fuqing County by the Fuqing County People's Government in November 1987, and as a youth moral education base of Fuqing City by the Fuqing Municipal Committee of the CPC and the Fuqing Municipal People's Government in April 2002.

Yangxia Village: Located outside the north gate of Fuqing, about four kilometers from the city. According to ancestral accounts, Yangxia Village was originally a stretch of land from Xiadi Mountain to Wajiaodou along the foothills, inhabited by ninety-nine households. The villagers here worked from sunrise to sunset, relying on farming for a living year-round, and could be considered to live in peace and contentment.

Today’s Yangxia Village has 737 households and a population of more than 2,400. The area includes four natural villages: Hotel, Danpu, Xinmeicuo, and Dangdou.
