Tomb of Martyr Chen Ying

The Tomb of Martyr Chen Ying is located next to the Ancestral Hall of Family Love on the northwest side of Xixi Village, Nanling Town, Fuqing City.

Martyr Chen Ying, originally named Chen Yiyu, was born in April 1926 into a poor family in Xixi Village. With no means to make a living, he joined the revolutionary cause upon the introduction of fellow villager Chen Mei. He demonstrated high political awareness and a strong sense of responsibility in his work. He joined the Communist Party of China on July 1, 1948, and was soon selected by Chen Hengyuan, deputy commander of the Minzhong Guerrilla Detachment, to serve as the squad leader of the headquarters guard and as his personal bodyguard.

In March 1949, Chen Hengyuan led guerrilla fighters in an attack against Nationalist troops and set up camp in Nanyang Village, Nanling, then part of Changle County. Soon after, the Nationalist Provincial Security Regiment launched a “mopping-up” operation. On the 21st, during the battle to repel the “mopping-up,” Chen Ying sacrificed his life at the age of just 24 in order to ensure the safe escape of Commander Chen Hengyuan. The enemy, seeing that Chen Ying was holding a handgun, mistook him for an officer and brutally beheaded him, later hanging his head on the city wall. His family hastily buried his body, but after much effort, the location of his head was discovered. After it was reunited with his body, they were finally laid to rest together in a family-owned plot of land.

After the liberation, Chen Ying was posthumously awarded the honorable title of “Revolutionary Martyr” in the first group of such honors by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Central People’s Government, and a martyr’s tomb was constructed in his memory. The tomb is backed by Xishan Mountain and faces Xixi Village. Fifty meters to the right of the tomb is a local columbarium. The surrounding area features steep terrain and dense woods. A cement road within the village leads directly to the martyr’s tomb. The tomb is laid out in a “wind” character shape, covering an area of 100 square meters. In front of the tomb is an offering table and a gravestone, and a marble memorial plaque bears eight large characters: “Martyr Chen Ying Lives Forever.”
