Former Site of the Luohali Base of the 1st Detachment of the Minzhong Red Army Guerrilla Unit
The former site of the Luohali Base of the 1st Detachment of the Minzhong Red Army Guerrilla Unit is located in the border area between Fuqing and Yongtai. It originally belonged to Yongtai County but was placed under Fuqing’s jurisdiction in 1958. During the three-year guerrilla war period, the Minzhong guerrilla zone was one of the southern guerrilla zones, and the Luohali guerrilla base was an important part of the Minzhong guerrilla zone.
After the Long March of the Red Army, the Fuqing County Committee of the Communist Party of China and the newly established Fuqing Guerrilla Brigade lost contact with their superiors and faced a difficult situation, urgently needing to establish a guerrilla base. At the end of February 1935, the Fuqing Central County Committee of the CPC sent Chen Yunfei to work in Guankou, a nearby market town to Luohali, waiting for an opportunity to enter Luohali. After many twists and turns, Liu Ahe, the uncle of bandit leader Liu Chunshui, assisted Chen Yunfei in bringing the guerrilla brigade into Luohali, thereby establishing the Luohali guerrilla base. In May 1935, the central county committees of Putian and Fuqing held a joint meeting in Zhangxi, deciding to dissolve the two central county committees and establish the Minzhong Special Committee of the CPC, with Wang Yujie as the committee secretary and Huang Xiaomin, Pan Tao, Liu Tujun, Yu Changyue, and Chen Bingkui as members. The Fuqing and Putian guerrilla brigades were reorganized into the 1st and 2nd Detachments of the Minzhong Red Army Guerrilla Unit, using Luohali and Changtai as their respective bases to carry out guerrilla warfare.
After the dissolution of the Fuqing Central County Committee, the Fuqing County Committee of the CPC was established, with Chen Bingkui, a member of the special committee, serving as the county party secretary and Chen Jinlai as the deputy secretary. The Fuqing County Committee of the CPC raised funds, food, weapons, and medicine for the guerrilla detachments, fully supporting the consolidation and development of the Luohali guerrilla base.
The 1st Detachment cleared out the remnants of Liu Chunshui’s forces within the Luohali base area, as well as two bands of bandits led by Wu Shoushi and Huang Ada, and the militia in Yidu and Guankou. While consolidating the Luohali base, the detachment also launched flexible and mobile military strikes against the local Kuomintang ruling forces. From the second half of 1935 to early 1936, there were five relatively significant battles.
The first was the raid on the Dayang Land Tax Office. In October 1935, Liu Tujun and Wu Debiao led over 80 guerrillas from the 1st Detachment to raid the land tax office at Dayang Ferry, completely annihilating the grain tax team and capturing the tax officer Fang Chunlin and the township head Guo Hanhou. The second was the Battle of Dongshanzhai. In November 1935, Wei Geng and Yang Caiheng led over 30 guerrillas to attack landlords at Dongshanzhai, burning a large number of mountain deeds, house deeds, and land deeds. The third was the attack on the Dayi Township Militia. In December 1935, Liu Tujun led the main force of the detachment to disarm over 80 militia members in Dayi Township, seizing over 30 rifles and rescuing more than 70 conscripts who had been detained. The fourth was the assault on Huyu Town. In February 1936, Liu Tujun, Wei Geng, Wu Debiao, and Yang Caiheng led over 60 fighters and 100 local civilians to attack Huyu Town, completely wiping out the enemy at Zilai Temple, seizing over 20 rifles, and transporting food, cloth, and other supplies belonging to local tyrants and landlords back to the Luohali guerrilla base. The fifth was the ambush at Hecun Bridge. In February 1936, Wu Debiao and others led over 70 fighters near Xiangsiling under Hecun Bridge, capturing seven Kuomintang officials, killing two military police, and seizing a batch of gold, silver, and cash.
After the ambush at Hecun Bridge, Chen Yi, the chairman of the Fujian Provincial Government of the Kuomintang, personally organized a “suppression campaign.” Over 3,000 troops from the vicinity of Fuzhou descended on the Luohali guerrilla zone. The 1st Detachment engaged in nearly two months of anti-suppression struggle and broke through the encirclement in early May 1936, leaving Luohali and moving to the Guangye Mountain area in Putian.
Luohasi Temple, also known as Shuangfu Temple, is located in Luohan Natural Village, Puli Village, Yidu Town, Fuqing City. It was a large temple during the Song and Yuan dynasties, with a construction area of 350 square meters. In the 1930s, the 1st Detachment of the Minzhong Red Army Guerrilla Unit often held meetings and conducted study sessions here.
