The Former Site of the Garrison of the 5th Detachment of the Minzhong Guerrilla Column — Longwo Chan Temple is located at the foot of Wulong Mountain in Humei Village, Chengtou Town, Fuqing City. From 1933 to September 1949, leaders of the Minzhong Guerrilla Unit such as Huang Guozhang, Lin Runan, and Chen Hengyuan, along with Fuqing-based revolutionaries including Chen Zhenliang, Yu Jianxing, and Chen Jiamao, conducted underground revolutionary activities at Longwo Chan Temple. Veterans from Jiangyin Wheat Island and Pingtan White Dog Island also held meetings here to discuss and plan various strategic policies. In May and June 1949, the 5th Squadron of the Minzhong Guerrilla Column (soon expanded into the 5th Detachment) led by Chen Zhenliang was stationed at Longwo Chan Temple. The temple served as their camp for regrouping troops, conducting military training, and planning to prevent the remnants of the Kuomintang forces from fleeing. The detachment deployed elite guerrilla fighters to mobilize the local population in rural areas and support frontline efforts. Personnel were also sent to gather boatmen from Haikou and Chengtou to hide boats in preparation for preventing enemies from escaping to Pingtan and other places. Small squads were dispatched to raid enemy outposts and disrupt their operations. Yu Konghua was sent to the Minzhong Guerrilla Command in Nantian Dayang to lead the 54th Regiment of the People’s Liberation Army across enemy lines to rendezvous with the detachment. This place became an important stronghold where the guerrillas supported and coordinated with the People’s Liberation Army in the liberation of Fuqing.

Longwo Chan Temple was established in the fifth year of the Xiantong era of the Tang Dynasty (864 AD), originally named Qielan Temple. It was burned down several times and rebuilt multiple times. In the third year of the Qiandao era of the Song Dynasty (1167 AD), with donations from patrons and broad community support, the Buddhist temple, scripture depository, Dharma hall, gate halls, and living quarters were constructed, and it was renamed “Longwo Chan Temple.” Monks flocked here, and the temple gained widespread fame, becoming one of Fujian’s renowned temples. Covering an area of 700 square meters, it features a three-courtyard axial layout. The front courtyard includes the Maitreya Hall and monks’ quarters; the middle courtyard once housed the main hall, which was destroyed during the Ming Dynasty; the bell and drum towers originally stood on either side of the stone courtyard in front of the main hall but have since been destroyed. The rear courtyard contains the Dharma Hall, Parents’ Hall, Ancestral Masters’ Hall, Diye Hall, and western kitchen. Longwo Chan Temple is now one of the five major temples in Fuqing and serves as a place of worship for villagers from Humei and surrounding villages.

The Former Site of the Garrison of the 5th Detachment of the Minzhong Guerrilla Column — Longwo Chan Temple was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Fuqing County by the Fuqing County People’s Government in November 1987.
