Former Site of the Underground Liaison Station at Xuegangtang
The former site of the underground liaison station at Xuegangtang is located in Xuegang Village, Gaoshan Town, Fuqing City.
Xuegangtang was originally a temple where villagers from Xuegang Village and nearby communities came to pray for the protection of the gods. During the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War, it functioned as a liaison station and operational base for the local Communist Party organizations in central Fujian and the guerrilla forces under their command. Due to its isolated position and superior geographical conditions, the temple saw a constant flow of devout worshippers from nearby villages who came to burn incense and pray, which provided good cover for covert operations and communication. In 1937, the Red Army guerrillas of central Fujian began their activities here. By 1940, Xuegangtang had been designated as a revolutionary liaison station by the underground Communist Party organization in Fuqing. Communists Weng Qiyu and Xue Youxiong recruited Ren Dudu, the temple caretaker, to join the revolution and appointed him to facilitate communication between the party organizations in the Long-Gao area and the anti-Japanese guerrilla forces. Under the guise of selling tea, he helped ensure smooth liaison for the underground party members. Throughout the subsequent Anti-Japanese War and Liberation War, Xuegangtang served as a crucial “fortress” in the fight against enemy forces and in achieving revolutionary victory.
Xuegangtang was originally built before the 25th year of the Wanli era during the Ming Dynasty and has stood through the Ming, Qing, and Republican periods. After the reform and opening-up, due to years of neglect, it was restored with funding donated by devotees from both China and abroad, including overseas Chinese from Japan, Indonesia, as well as compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Construction began in 2003 and was completed in the lunar December of 2005, resulting in the current three-courtyard main hall complex with a floor area of 1,027 square meters and a protected area spanning 5,550 square meters. The front courtyard serves as a stage for the Tianxian Music Troupe, the middle courtyard accommodates audience seating, and the rear courtyard houses the shrine for the deities. To protect against wind and rain, the structure mainly uses reinforced concrete, with some wooden elements used for windows.
On February 25, 2010, the Fuqing Municipal People’s Government held a celebration ceremony for the completion of the reconstructed Xuegangtang. Currently, Xuegangtang stands as an important revolutionary heritage site in the Long-Gao area and also serves as a key cultural venue for the villagers of Xuegang.
