Dongyu Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery
Dongyu Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism scenic area.
Dongyu Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is located on the side of the Yanzhang Road in Dongyu Village, Yingqian Subdistrict, at the foot of Daxiang Mountain in Changle District.
Dongyu Martyrs' Cemetery is the resting place of seven martyrs from the Fujian Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, Fu-Chang-Lin Central County Committee (later renamed the Fu-Ma Working Committee of the Fujian Central Committee), including Chen Dakun (Organization Minister), Lin Po (Deputy Organization Minister), Chen Dingbo (Working Committee Organization Minister), Lin...
In 1949, as Fuzhou was about to be liberated, during the Kuomintang’s operations to suppress, ambush, and arrest underground CCP members in Changle and Minhou on March 18, July 27, and August 12, six of the seven comrades were captured, and one died in battle. Chen Dakun and Lin Po were captured in Changle County and taken to Jiangtian. During interrogation, they remained defiant, arguing passionately all day to promote patriotic democracy. In the dead of night before their execution, the two martyrs faced death calmly, sang mournfully, shouted slogans, marched bravely to the execution ground, and were tragically buried alive. Lin Dayou was captured in Guhuai, tortured for information but remained steadfast. He was grotesquely mutilated—his nose and ears cut off, his heart and liver gouged out, and he was tortured to death by slicing before being thrown into a latrine pit. Lin Jingguo fought bravely while sick in the Lwei Battle, was seriously wounded and captured, and was tied to a tree. He cursed the enemy relentlessly before being disemboweled and beheaded. Lin Xiangyu was captured during a surprise enemy attack on the Daxiang Mountain base and was beheaded at his home’s doorstep in Dongyu Village. The enemy then forced his father, Lin Tianliang, to carry his martyr’s head to Fangkou bandit headquarters to be displayed publicly. Yan Zhang died in battle at Hutou Mountain while covering his comrades’ escape, shot heroically. Chen Dingbo was captured due to a foot injury during the Battle of Yalongding and taken to Fuzhou’s Dongyue Temple, where he endured brutal torture. On the early morning of August 17, he was executed by fleeing enemies in Luojia Village, Minhou.
After liberation, the Fujian Minhou Prefectural Committee and government decided to collect the remains of the seven martyrs, select a burial site in Dongyu Village, and build a cemetery. In July 1957, the martyrs’ cemetery was completed. In October 1999, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Changle Municipal Party Committee and government allocated special funds twice to expand and renovate the cemetery, adding a new memorial archway and martyrs’ pavilion. Ye Fei, former Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Party Committee, inscribed the gate plaque “Dongyu Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery.” Wen Fushan, former Vice Governor of Fujian, inscribed the monument “The Story of the Seven Loyal Souls by the Wulong River,” and General Xiao Ke wrote on the memorial: “Eternal glory to the revolutionary martyrs who bravely sacrificed themselves for the founding of New China.”
The main structure of Dongyu Martyrs' Cemetery covers an area of 475 square meters. The martyrs’ tomb, stele, and pavilion are located in the central plaza of the cemetery, forming a 7.1m x 7.1m square (symbolizing the Party’s birthday). The structure is a square four-cornered pavilion made of reinforced concrete and marble, featuring a double-layered roof design. The tomb is surrounded by four-tiered square tower-like plinths, with a granite tombstone standing tall at the top, facing east. The front of the stele is inscribed in imitation Song typeface: “Tomb of Revolutionary Martyrs Chen Dakun, Lin Po, Chen Dingbo, Lin Dayou, Lin Xiangyu, Lin Jingguo, and Yan Zhang,” while the back reads: “Immortalized Forever.” To the left of the stele is engraved: “Inherit the glorious traditions of revolutionary martyrs and strive for socialist construction.” The right side features the “Stele Inscription,” and the four pillars of the pavilion are also inscribed with couplets praising the heroes.
In December 2000, Dongyu Martyrs' Cemetery was designated as a Patriotic Education Base by the Changle Municipal Party Committee and the Changle Municipal People’s Government.
