Mawei Martyrs' Cemetery

Mawei Martyrs' Cemetery is located at the foot of Fei Mountain on the southeastern side of the Mawei Tunnel.

On August 15, 1949, the 271st, 272nd, and 276th Regiments of the 10th Corps of the Third Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army were ordered to march southward from eastern Fujian. Using tactics of flanking maneuvers and pincer advances, they cut off the enemy’s sea and land escape routes, while simultaneously launching assaults on the Nationalist Youth Army’s 603rd and 953rd Regiments from the highlands and along the riverbanks in Mawei. This led to fierce mountain and urban combat. On August 16, they captured the strategically important port town of Mawei, clearing the way for the liberation of Fuzhou. During the battle, over 100 outstanding officers and soldiers sacrificed their lives for the people’s liberation. Due to the disbandment of the original military units and historical reasons, the cemetery was primarily established based on the martyr archives preserved by the 31st Army of the PLA. The remains of 36 identified martyrs who bravely gave their lives for the liberation of Mawei, originally buried in scattered locations, were relocated and interred here to be honored by future generations.

To commemorate the martyrs who heroically sacrificed their lives during the battle for the liberation of Mawei, the Mawei District Government began constructing the Mawei Martyrs' Cemetery in April 1991, completing it in December 1993. The main structures of the cemetery include a memorial platform with the “Martyrs' Cemetery” stele, a second platform featuring the “Cemetery Chronicle and Epilogue” stele, and a third platform consisting of martyr tombs, a martyrs’ name list stele, and a screen wall inscribed with “Eternal Glory to Revolutionary Martyrs.” The total construction area is 1,150 square meters. The cemetery is situated on high ground overlooking the surroundings, with a tomb path built along the mountain slope, stretching 108 meters in total length. The overall atmosphere is solemn and respectful.

In 1994, Mawei Martyrs' Cemetery was designated as a Fuzhou Patriotic Education Base by the Fuzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Fuzhou Municipal People's Government.
