Former Site of the Fuzhou Command of the Chinese National Liberation Vanguard
The former site of the Fuzhou Command of the Chinese National Liberation Vanguard is a classic red tourism attraction.
The former site of the Fuzhou Command of the Chinese National Liberation Vanguard is located at No. 238 Xiàháng Road, Taijiang District, Fuzhou City (formerly No. 108 Xiàháng Road).
After the establishment of the New Fourth Army Fuzhou Office, in the early stages of the War of Resistance against Japan, in order to expand the anti-Japanese united front, various public or semi-public organizations were established through different channels to mobilize the masses to join the anti-Japanese movement. In April 1938, Wang Zhu, director of the New Fourth Army Fuzhou Office, instructed underground party members Zheng Ting, Shu Cheng, and others to establish the Fuzhou branch of the Chinese National Liberation Vanguard (abbreviated as Minxian). In early June 1938, the Fuzhou Command of the Chinese National Liberation Vanguard was officially established, with Zheng Ting serving as Commander, Ouyang Tianding as Deputy Commander, and Shu Cheng as Party Group Secretary. Their activities were based at Shengshun Tea House at No. 108 Xiàháng Road, Taijiang District (now No. 238 Xiàháng Road, Taijiang District), which was the home of Ouyang Tianding. The main task of the Fuzhou Command of Minxian was to unite patriotic and progressive youth under the leadership of the Party and carry out anti-Japanese salvation activities. Under the Party’s leadership, the Fuzhou branch of Minxian focused on strengthening its own organization and actively promoting the anti-Japanese salvation movement in Fuzhou, making significant contributions to the Party’s propaganda efforts and spreading revolutionary ideas.
After the establishment of the Command, through the education and training provided by comrades such as Zheng Ting, Li Tie, and Shu Cheng, the number of Minxian members grew continuously. Most members were patriotic youths from local schools, government offices, and shops. Through training at liaison stations, they were directly developed into Communist Party members, thereby strengthening the revolutionary forces. The Command also opened an underground communication line between Fujian and Shanghai, providing a base of operations for the Party between the two regions. It was also responsible for maintaining secret contact between the Fujian Party organization and the Central East China Bureau as well as the Party Central Committee in Yan’an. The Command undertook the secret transport of revolutionary publications and provided protection for Party members and leading cadres traveling to the liberated areas in Northern Jiangsu.
The site faces south and is built with brick and wood, covering an area of approximately 2,000 square meters. The front and rear sections are separated by high walls and connected by stone-framed doors. It consists of two sections, with several wing rooms, wooden stairs, and wooden flooring.
The establishment of the Fuzhou Command of the Chinese National Liberation Vanguard played a positive role in the Party’s active promotion of anti-Japanese salvation propaganda, mobilizing and awakening the masses, and spreading revolutionary truths. It also infused new vitality into the Party and supplied a large number of revolutionary backbone members.
