Fuzhou Jiaojielong Revolutionary Martyrs' Execution Site Memorial

The Fuzhou Jiaojielong Revolutionary Martyrs' Execution Site Memorial is a classic red tourism destination.

The Fuzhou Jiaojielong Revolutionary Martyrs' Execution Site Memorial is located within the Mengchao Hepatobiliary Hospital of Fujian Medical University at No. 312 Xihong Road, Gulou District. After the “April 3rd” coup in 1927, the Kuomintang reactionary forces launched a massive crackdown on Communists. From then on, batches of outstanding Communists were martyred one after another at Jiaojielong.

Century-old lychee trees have witnessed those years. The first martyr sacrificed here was Weng Liangyu, the Organization Minister of the Communist Youth League Fuzhou Committee, who was killed by warlords in 1926. In 1927, Fang Erhao, the first secretary of the CCP Fuzhou Committee and one of Fuzhou’s first group of Communists, was executed at the young age of 23. Xu Chen, the fourth secretary, and his revolutionary partner Yu Zhizhen held a “wedding on the execution ground” here when they were just 20 years old. Also martyred that year were Luo Yangcai, Zheng Changzhang, and Zhu Mingzhuang. During the Agrarian Revolutionary period, outstanding Red Army commanders such as Ye Kai, Chen Xiangrong, Tao Renguan, Lin Xiaoj, Ke Chenggui, and Chen Xinggui, along with the “Five Martyrs of Central Fujian Special Committee” — Wang Yujie, Huang Xiaomin, Pan Tao, Chen Bingkui, and Yu Changyue — were executed heroically here. By 1949, over 180 outstanding Communists from the land of Fujian had been martyred here, with documented records, making it known as the “Fuzhou Yuhuatai.”

Outside the west gate, by the ancient wall. Reactionary forces acted brutally, slaughtering without mercy; Communists remained resolute, facing death unflinchingly. In just a few years around the Great Revolution, dozens of revolutionaries, Communists, and Red Army soldiers — including Weng Liangyu, Fang Erhao, Xu Chen, Yu Zhizhen, Ye Kai, Chen Xiangrong, Tao Renguan, Ke Chenggui, Chen Xinggui, Wang Yujie, Huang Xiaomin, Pan Tao, Chen Bingkui, and Yu Changyue — were martyred here with great valor. For their ideals, for the well-being of all, they set aside personal life and death, entrusting their parents’ love to the world — truly, their loyalty shone brighter than the sun and moon, their noble spirit strengthened rivers and mountains.

How unfortunate is Jiaojielong, witnessing men shed blood time and again; the old lychee tree stands silently, haunted by the spirits of the martyrs. The green hills are blessed to cradle loyal bones, and the flowing waters murmur in tribute to the eternal rest. The people’s country is ruled by the people — let us not forget that tempestuous song, that iron-blooded struggle of thousands. On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of New China, this monument is erected especially to honor the martyrs’ achievements and express deep remembrance. It also serves to encourage our peers and inspire future generations: do not forget history, uphold what must not be forgotten, and work together with one heart and one mind for the scientific development of Fuzhou, for the leapfrog progress of our hometown. Let us unite in effort, muster our spirits, live up to expectations, and build a shared tomorrow.

Epilogue:

During the Republican era, Jiaojielong outside the west gate of Fuzhou was where reactionary forces executed Communists. In 1926, revolutionary Weng Liangyu, and in 1927, Fang Erhao, the first secretary of the CCP Fuzhou Committee, were martyred here with great courage. Revolutionary couple Xu Chen and Yu Zhizhen, Red Army soldiers Ye Kai, Chen Xiangrong, Tao Renguan, Ke Chenggui, and Chen Xinggui, as well as members of the CCP Central Fujian Special Committee such as Wang Yujie, Huang Xiaomin, Pan Tao, Chen Bingkui, and Yu Changyue — dozens of comrades sacrificed themselves here. The martyrs, unyielding and fearless in the face of death, composed a glorious and heroic chapter in Fuzhou’s revolutionary history with their youth and lives. They are the pride of the people of Fuzhou and will be forever remembered.
