Wenglinshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery
Wenglinshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.
Wenglinshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is located at the southeastern foot of General Mountain on Wenglin Road, Gulou District, Fuzhou City.
Wenglinshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery was built in 1979 and covers an area of over 130 acres. The main architectural complex consists of the Fuzhou Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall, the Monument, martyrs' tombs, servicemen's tombs, the Chang’an Hall, and office buildings. With a construction area of 4,941 square meters, the site is built against the mountain, offering a commanding and solemn presence with a majestic atmosphere.
The two side gates of Wenglinshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery are designed to feature Fuzhou’s “Three Mountains.” Ascending 332 steps from the main gate, visitors first enter the Fuzhou Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall. This three-story building features a flat roof with double eaves, surrounded by corridors on all sides, presenting a grand and imposing sight. Completed and opened in 1995, the hall has an exhibition area of 285 square meters. It showcases the glorious history of Fuzhou people's revolutionary struggles through sculptures, oil paintings, pictorial records, portraits and belongings of martyrs, images of revolutionary relics, and other materials. It serves an educational purpose by highlighting the heroic achievements of the martyrs. The first floor serves as the entrance hall, featuring a preface, inscriptions from leaders, large-scale bas-reliefs, and a Roll of Honor of Revolutionary Martyrs. The central wall displays a large bronze-toned bas-relief: the upper part depicts a miniature of Fuzhou’s “Three Mountains and Two Pagodas” and the ancient streets of the city, while the lower part shows the Wanshou Bridge spanning the Min River and the heroic scene of the People’s Liberation Army fighting to capture the bridge during the liberation of Fuzhou. To the left of the large bas-relief hangs Mao Zedong’s inscription: “Eternal Glory to the People’s Heroes.” To the right is Liu Shaoqi’s inscription: “To die for the people’s cause is to live forever.” The north side features a display cabinet that outlines the glorious history of Fuzhou people’s revolution and the heroic contributions of over 2,500 national elites who laid the foundation for the birth of New China. The south side displays the Roll of Honor of Fuzhou Revolutionary Martyrs, accompanied by a large oil painting titled “Marching Forward to Build a Monument,” reflecting the spirit of the martyrs. Below the display cabinets are finely crafted Rolls of Honor of Revolutionary Martyrs organized by city, district, and county, shining brightly for generations to come.
At the highest point of Wenglinshan stands the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, which is 27.8 meters tall. The shape of the monument resembles a pair of giant hands reaching toward the sky, symbolizing the great victory of the revolution achieved by the strength of the people’s hands and the tremendous accomplishments of socialist construction. The circle at the top center of the monument represents the Communist Party of China as the leading core of the revolution. The base is octagonal, resembling the land of the Eight Min regions. It is adorned with 17 stone-carved wreaths, commemorating the liberation of Fuzhou on August 17. The eight powerful characters on the monument, “Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs,” were inscribed by Fang Yi. The firmly standing monument adds to the magnificence, solemnity, and dignity of the cemetery. Southwest of the monument lie three martyrs’ tombs: those of Dù Fèngruì, a special-grade air force hero; Fuzhou Revolutionary Martyrs; and Revolutionary Servicemen. After years of greening and landscaping, the cemetery has a green coverage rate of over 70%, remaining lush year-round with flowers blooming in every season.
In May 1990, Wenglinshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery was designated as a Cultural Heritage Site Protected by Fujian Province by the Fujian Provincial People’s Government. In January 1995, it was recognized as a National Patriotic Education Base by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. In June 1997, it was designated as a Fujian Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee and the Fujian Provincial People’s Government. In September 2009, it was announced as a Fujian Provincial Party History Education Base by the Party History Research Office of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee.
