The former site of the headquarters of the Red Army's Northern Expeditionary Anti-Japanese Vanguard is a classic red tourism attraction.
The former site of the headquarters of the Red Army's Northern Expeditionary Anti-Japanese Vanguard is located in Baizhang Village, Baita Township, Luoyuan County.
After the Fifth Counter-Encirclement Campaign in the Central Soviet Area, the Central Committee decided to reorganize the 7th Red Army Corps, led by Xun Huai-zhou, Le Shao-hua, and Su Yu, into the Northern Expeditionary Anti-Japanese Vanguard. On August 10, 1934, the Red Army's Northern Expeditionary Anti-Japanese Vanguard advanced into Luoyuan. On the 12th, it set up its general headquarters in Baizhang Village. Commander-in-Chief Xun Huai-zhou met here with Ren Tie-feng, commander of the 2nd Independent Regiment of the Fujian-Eastern Red Army, Wei Geng, commander of the 13th Independent Regiment of the Fujian-Eastern Red Army, Political Commissar Ye Ru-zhen, Chief of Staff Yang Cai-heng, and Zhang Rui-cai, a member of the Lianluo Central County Committee, among others, to plan the attack on Luoyuan County. On the afternoon of August 13, after obtaining intelligence, the Vanguard held a combat meeting in Baita Village and decided to attack Luoyuan County that night. That night, under the command of Chief of Staff Su Yu and with the support of local guerrilla forces, the Vanguard successfully captured Luoyuan City in one swift operation. They eliminated over 1,000 enemy troops, seized several hundred rifles and machine guns along with numerous weapons and equipment, and captured more than 40 enemy personnel including County Magistrate Xu Zhen-fang. On the early morning of the 14th, they liberated Luoyuan City. On the afternoon of the 15th, the Vanguard exchanged silver dollars for the Soviet-area currency used by Red Army soldiers to purchase goods, arranged for the care of the wounded and sick, and then, amid the cheers of the entire city’s residents, withdrew from Luoyuan and continued their northward march.
The liberation of Luoyuan City connected several small guerrilla zones such as Ningde and Lianjiang, greatly boosting the morale of the entire Fujian-Eastern Party and its people.
The former site of the headquarters of the Red Army's Northern Expeditionary Anti-Japanese Vanguard was built in the late Qing Dynasty. The structure covers an area of about 600 square meters, features a brick-and-wood design, is a single-story tiled house, with a watchtower in the inner northeast corner designed in the She ethnic style, and has earthen floors and whitewashed walls.
