Lanpu Anti-Japanese War Site
The Lanpu Anti-Japanese War Site is a classic red tourism destination.
The Lanpu Anti-Japanese War Site is located in Lanpu Village, Xiangqian Town, Minhou County. Lanpu Village lies at the junction where the mountain ranges of Minhou, Changle, and Fuqing counties meet, surrounded by rolling hills with the majestic Wuhu Mountains standing prominently in view.
On May 1, 1945, a squad of 12 Japanese soldiers invaded from Yingqian, Changle, to Shanggan in Linsen County, and under the cover of night, broke into the home of Lin Aiyong in the mountain shack of Lanpu. They looted food supplies and slaughtered poultry. Lin Aiyong’s mother, Huang Damei, undeterred—fearlessly confronted the Japanese soldiers and fought with them, resulting in her being stabbed nine times and dying a tragic death on the spot. Her daughter-in-law, Pan Xiujie, attempted to escape by climbing over the wall but was spotted by the soldiers and also killed. Upon hearing the news, the people of Lanpu were filled with outrage. The next day, the anti-Japanese self-defense team of Lanpu Village, organized under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, mobilized villagers to take up weapons such as bird guns, machetes, hoes, and wooden sticks. They divided into two groups to attack the Japanese position. One group ascended to the peak of Daping, taking a commanding high ground position to prepare for striking the enemy; the other group employed a flanking maneuver to approach the Japanese. At this time, the Japanese were on Lanpu Ridge cooking rice over an open fire, dividing up the stolen chickens and ducks. When the signal gong sounded from the peak of Daping, the anti-Japanese self-defense team quickly aimed at the enemy, concentrated their firepower, and launched volley fire. Caught off guard, eight Japanese soldiers were immediately killed. The remaining soldiers fought desperately in a last stand, returning fire against the self-defense team. Pan Xiuzhuan, a member of the self-defense team, was accidentally exposed while reloading his weapon and was tragically shot and killed by enemy fire. This further inflamed the anger of the self-defense team and the villagers, who shouted, “Kill the Japanese...” and charged down toward the enemy, killing two more Japanese soldiers. The last two Japanese soldiers fled in panic along the ridges toward Qianyu Village. However, the villagers on Qianyu Mountain had already prepared an ambush. Blocked and surrounded with no means of escape, the two soldiers ultimately took their own lives.
In January 2003, responding to the initiative of the village committee, party members and “Five Elders” of Lanpu Village actively began constructing an Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Memorial Pavilion on Magang Mountain within the village. At the same time, they erected a Monument to Anti-Japanese Martyrs at the site where martyr Pan Xiuzhuan sacrificed his life, to inspire future generations to remember national humiliation and build a better homeland.
