On April 19, 1941, after Lianjiang fell to Japanese forces for the first time, the (Provisional) County Committee of the CCP in Lianjiang, following instructions from the provincial committee, organized a local anti-Japanese guerrilla unit. Liang Renqin, secretary of the CCP Xiayang Branch, gave party members and anti-Japanese key figures the secret signal to “carry your ‘bowls’ and ‘chopsticks’ with you.” The so-called “bowls” referred to homemade pistols and hand grenades, while the “chopsticks” were rifles. On the morning of April 20, over 120 guerrilla fighters, armed with broadswords and spears (only a few had rifles), lined up in front of Jiushifu Manor in Xiagongli, Xiayang Village, and formally announced the establishment of the “Xiayang Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Unit,” with Liang Renqin as captain and Chen Weiyu as deputy. The guerrilla unit cooperated with Chen Naimin, the head of the Kuomintang (KMT) Xiayang Township, in resisting the Japanese. He handed over four rifles to the guerrillas and also seized a light machine gun, 26 rifles, 380 rounds of ammunition, and 24 hand grenades from dispersed soldiers of the KMT’s 75th Division. The guerrilla unit operated in the areas of Changlong, Xiayang, and Pukou, keeping the Japanese invaders in constant unrest.

Chen Gongbei, the KMT magistrate of Lianjiang County, meticulously plotted to dismantle the guerrilla unit and brutally killed Captain Liang Renqin. Chen Weiyu took over as captain of the Xiayang Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Unit, with Qiu Hui serving as political instructor. In July, the Xiayang guerrillas joined forces with the Donghu guerrillas and KMT troops to ambush the Japanese on a hillside, killing the highest-ranking Japanese commander in Lianjiang, Harada, and six other enemy soldiers. In August, the guerrillas also won a brilliant victory in the “Qianrenyin” ambush, killing 16 Japanese puppet troops, seizing more than ten Type 38 rifles, and then advancing to attack the Japanese artillery bunker in Pukou.

On September 3, Lianjiang County was liberated. The KMT sought to incorporate the Xiayang guerrilla unit into the county security forces. Following party instructions, most of the guerrillas dispersed and went into hiding. On September 3, 1944, when the Japanese once again captured Lianjiang, the Xiayang guerrilla unit resumed armed struggle behind enemy lines until the victory of the Anti-Japanese War was achieved.

Jiushifu Manor in Xiayang Village covers a construction area of 1,000 square meters. Built in the late Qing Dynasty, it has a brick-and-wood structure. The original site underwent expansion and is currently well preserved.
