Former Site of the Establishment of the Lianjiang County Revolutionary Committee

The former site of the establishment of the Lianjiang County Revolutionary Committee is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the establishment of the Lianjiang County Revolutionary Committee, Da Wang Palace, is located in Yi’ao Natural Village, Hongfeng Village, Changlong Town, Lianjiang County.

In the spring of 1933, the struggles in the Lianjiang area against famine, for grain distribution, debt cancellation, and resistance to taxes powerfully intimidated and shook the ruling position of the landlord class in rural areas. The once imposing “gentlemen” in long gowns and mandarin jackets became pitiful figures and “scarecrows” in front of the peasant associations, making the peasants realize that the Communist Party and guerrilla forces were genuinely fighting for the interests of the poor. They also deeply experienced the power of unity and collective struggle, laying the foundation for establishing worker-peasant armed bases and creating a red political power.

In March 1933, a grand representative conference of revolutionary masses from various districts and townships of Lianjiang County was held in Da Wang Palace, Yi’ao Village, the mountainous guerrilla zone of Changlong. It marked the establishment of the first red political power in Lianjiang’s history—the Lianjiang County Revolutionary Committee. This was also the earliest worker-peasant red political power to emerge among the 11 counties in the entire eastern Fujian region. The conference officially elected 18 members of the Revolutionary Committee, including Chairman Lin Nennen (a martyr), Vice Chairman, and commissioners for counter-revolution suppression, military affairs, culture, food supply, land, and finance. The County Revolutionary Committee oversaw the Mountain Area Revolutionary Committee, chaired by Lin Maogan (a martyr); and the Hongtang Township Revolutionary Committee, chaired by Lan Liyi.

In its first public notice, the Lianjiang County Revolutionary Committee solemnly declared that the Revolutionary Committee was “the government of the poor.” The notice also pointed out: “Under the cover of imperialists who rule through feudal gentry, landlords, warlords, bureaucrats, and their lackey, the Kuomintang, they have reached the stage of squeezing the very last drop of blood from the broad masses of poor people, pushing them deeper into dire straits, living in hunger and cold in an inhumane way. This cannibalistic society can no longer be allowed to continue—it has already been sentenced to death.”

The existing Da Wang Palace site covers a construction area of 352 square meters. The building date is unknown, and it is of brick-and-wood structure, currently in general condition of preservation.
