Tingjiang Fort

Tingjiang Fort is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Tingjiang Fort, located in Nanban Village, Tingtou, Tingjiang Town, Mawei District, Fuzhou City, forms a strategic response with Xiangyu Fort in Changle, guarding the Min River together and constituting the second line of defense at the Min River estuary. It was initially built in the 14th year of the Shunzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1657), renovated after the First Opium War, and underwent two restorations in the 6th (1880) and 12th (1886) years of the Guangxu reign. The fort complex consists of the main artillery battery atop the hill, a forward artillery position on the hill’s flank, a riverside battery cluster along the shore, and an ammunition depot behind the hill. The main battery sits atop a small hill about 20 meters high, built with rammed earth in a semi-circular, semi-subterranean structure (1.85 meters deep, 18.3 meters in inner diameter, and walls 3.3 meters thick). The forward battery is located halfway up the hill of the main battery, shaped like a concave character, covering an area of 20 square meters. The ammunition depot is situated in a mountain hollow behind the main battery, rectangular in shape, measuring 7.2 meters long, 6.6 meters wide, and 3.1 meters high.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) designated Tingjiang Fort as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Tingjiang Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Mawei District, Fuzhou City. It is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese. Established as the Tingjiang Commune in 1958, it was restructured as a township in 1984 and upgraded to a town in 1989. Located on the northern bank of the Min River estuary, it is 28 kilometers from the city center. Covering an area of 106.7 square kilometers with a population of 34,000, it administers 19 village committees (Chang’an, Dongqi, Yingyu, Xianglu, Changbing, Dongjie, Xiangyang, Aoxi, Hushan, Shengmei, Tingtou, Xibian, Hongtang, Min’an, Dongsheng, Kangban, Qianyang, Baimei, Niuxiang) and 2 neighborhood committees (Tingtou, Min’an).
