Fushan Village

Lachu, located in Zhangban Town, Hui’an County, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, faces Chongwu to the north, Xiangzhi to the south, Zhangban to the west, and Taiwan to the east. Since ancient times, Lachu has been an isolated island. According to records, during the Tang Dynasty, the monk Huìyuǎn from Hangzhou’s Lingyin Temple traveled south to this area. From afar, he saw a mountain floating on the sea, so he anchored his boat and landed, eventually building a temple on the easternmost part of the island. The temple was named Fushan Temple, and later the village was named after the temple—Fushan Village.

In the early 1970s, under the organization of the Hui’an County government, the “July 1st Reclamation” command work group was established. Villagers from the entire village, along with some residents from other villages, began the county’s well-known “July 1st Reclamation” project. With their own hands and hard work, the villagers built two seawalls—one to the north and one to the south—transforming the originally isolated Lachu Island into what later became a peninsula.
