Former Site of Li Wenhui’s Residence

The former site of Li Wenhui’s residence is a cultural relic protection unit of Hui’an County.

The former site of Li Wenhui’s residence is located in Hounèi Village, Xiaozuo Town, dating from the Song Dynasty to the modern era.

Originally built during the Shaoxing period of the Song Dynasty (1131–1162), it was renovated in the early Qing Dynasty and rebuilt in 1997. Oriented northeast to southwest, it features a two-courtyard, three-bay layout with side rooms, constructed with a brick, stone, and wood structure, covering a floor area of 450 square meters. It has a flush-gable roof with swallowtail ridges and double eaves extending over the roof edges. To the east of the residence, there remains an ancient well dating back a thousand years. Li Wenhui, a native of Hounèi Village in Xiaozuo, passed the imperial examination in the second year of the Jianyan reign during the Song Dynasty and was appointed as Grand Academician of the Duanming Hall in the fourteenth year of the Shaoxing reign (1144), serving as concurrently Signatory of the Privy Council and Acting Vice Chancellor.

The former site of Li Wenhui’s residence is the eleventh batch of county-level cultural relic protection units in Hui’an County.

Protected area: extends to the alleys on the east and west sides, to the edge of the courtyard on the south side, and to the outer wall of the residential house on the north side.

In his later years, Li Wenhui, Vice Chancellor of the Song Dynasty, returned to reside here. As the location lies in the northern part of the Xiaozuo Peninsula, behind the front area, it was thus called “Hòulǐ” (Back Village). Due to the local dialect referring to “inside” as “nèi,” it came to be written as Hòunèi (Back Inside), hence the name Hounèi Village. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it belonged to Huangkēng Pù in the Thirty-first District. In the Republican era, it was part of Hounèi Bǎo under Jìngfēng Xiāng. From the winter of 1949 onward, it successively belonged to Hounèi Xiāng in the Third District, Fourth District, and Xiǎozuò Xiāng in Dōnglǐng District. Starting in 1958, it was placed under Hounèi Dàduì in the Feiyuè Commune, Xiaozuo Commune, and Jìngfēng Commune. In 1961, a new brigade was established at Xīnqiáo. Since 1984...
