The stone carvings at Baode Shrine are located on Keshan Hill in the Northwest Community of Luocheng Town and date back to the Ming Dynasty. These carvings are preserved within the Baode Shrine on Keshan. In the 39th year of the Wanli reign (1611), local gentry from Hui’an erected a life-sized statue and built a memorial shrine for Imperial Censor Liu Wanghai to express their gratitude for his efforts in exempting the people of Hui’an from taxes and rents. They also erected a stele to commend his virtues. The stone carvings at Baode Shrine include: one Baode gate plaque, one stone statue of Liu Wanghai, two virtue-praising steles, and a pair of stone lions, all dating from the Ming Dynasty. The stone statue of Liu Wanghai, wearing official robes and hat, sits upright holding a tablet, representing his real-life appearance. Inside the shrine are two inscribed steles praising Liu’s merits, authored respectively by the Ming Dynasty scholar-official He Qiaoyuan and Kang Shipin, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations from Hui’an. The gate bears a “Baode” (Virtue Repaid) plaque, and outside the gate stands a pair of Ming Dynasty stone lions with bold, simple lines that exemplify the carving techniques of the Southern School of the Ming period.
