Huidong Uprising Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument

The Huidong Uprising Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is located beside Feifeng Temple in Houyang Village, Shanxia Town.

The Huidong Uprising Monument in Shanxia-Houyang was originally situated near Houyang Primary School, and was relocated to the vicinity of Feifeng Temple after the school moved. It has been designated as a county-level cultural heritage protection unit and a patriotic education base.

The Hui’an Uprising is also referred to as the Huidong Uprising.

In 1929, Su Keming and others infiltrated the Zhang Can militia in Chongwu, using the establishment of the Fengyang (Houyang) Township Militia as a cover to build the core of a revolutionary armed force.

In early July 1930, the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Quanzhou Special Committee decided to launch the Hui’an Uprising. They established the First Independent Division of the Fujian Red Army and the Hui’an Command of the Fujian Red Army, with the Huibei region forming the First Regiment and the Huidong region forming the Second Regiment.

On September 16, the Second Red Regiment set out from Houyang Village, captured the Shanbing Militia watchtower, and subsequently established the Wuchen Township Soviet Government. The troops then advanced toward Qianhuang Village, Angu Village, and Shan Yao Village. On the 17th, they occupied Hudaitou and established a village Soviet Government. In the afternoon of the 18th, as planned, they took control of Yutou Village, more than ten li from the county seat, using the Mountain Land Palace as a temporary battlefield command post.

In the early hours of the 19th, over a thousand Nationalist Marines and troops launched a three-sided assault on Yutou Mountain. After two hours of fierce fighting, Chen Kun, Zeng Laibi, Chen Tiansong, and Chen Xianwen were killed in battle. The main force of the Second Red Regiment retreated from the north.

After the uprising failed, the Nationalist army continued to suppress revolutionary forces and persecuted families of Red Army members, forcing over a hundred households in the Huidong area alone to flee their homes.
