Chongwu Liberation Army Martyrs' Temple

The Chongwu Liberation Army Martyrs' Temple is located in Xihua, Chongwu, Hui’an County.

The Liberation Army Martyrs' Temple is the first temple in China built to honor Liberation Army martyrs. It is located on Xisha Bay in Chongwu, next to the Chongwu Holiday Hotel and close to the Chongwu Ancient Town. It has become a tourist destination in Chongwu and was designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit and patriotic education base in 2002.

In 1993, Zeng Hen, a woman from Hui’an who was rescued by Liberation Army soldiers, began raising funds from various sources to gradually expand the temple. With investments exceeding one million yuan, the current building covers an area of about 1,000 square meters, with a protected zone spanning 6,000 square meters.

In September 1949, soldiers from the 251st Regiment of the 84th Division of the 28th Army of the 10th Corps of the People’s Liberation Army traveled from Pingtan, Fujian Province, to Chongwu on six wooden sailboats to prepare for the Battle of Liberation of Kinmen and Xiamen. On the 17th, enemy aircraft suddenly launched an air raid. At the time, the fishing town was bustling with a market, creating a dangerous situation. To protect civilians, the PLA soldiers, who were training on Xisha Bay, immediately used machine guns to fire at the enemy planes, drawing their fire toward themselves. Under the fierce bombing, 27 soldiers sacrificed their lives heroically, while the lives of local people were saved.
