Fu'an Jinzhongshan Scenic Area
The Jinzhongshan Scenic Area is situated in the northwest of Fu'an City, 15 kilometers from the town government of Xiaoyang. It borders Shouning to the north, Zhouning to the west, faces Baiyun Mountain—the highest peak in eastern Fujian—to the east, and connects to Jiulong to the south, with elevations ranging between 700 and 1,150 meters. The scenic area centers on locations such as Shoujian Natural Village and Shouyang Administrative Village in Xiaoyang Town, the Jinzhong District, and the Xiating Gorge, covering a total area of over 20 square kilometers. The wonders of nature have created the magical Jinzhongshan Scenic Area in Fu'an City, yet for many years this attraction has remained hidden away in the deep mountains, unknown to most.
The Jinzhongshan Scenic Area features a landscape of rugged peaks, bizarre rocks, clusters of mountain pools and waterfalls, steep cliffs, and caves scattered throughout. There are six major gorges, eight unique shoals, 36 peaks, 36 cliffs, 36 caves, 36 waterfalls, 48 pools, and 72 peculiar rocks among its natural attractions. It also boasts cultural sites such as the ancient and mysterious Jinzhong Temple, the thousand-year-old Suoquan Temple, the legendary Shoujian Natural Village, and the ecologically intact and historically rich Shouyang Administrative Village. In total, there are 12 scenic zones and 111 individual sites. Notably, Comrade Ye Fei, a proletarian revolutionary of the older generation, once directed guerrilla warfare in this remarkable land, living a revolutionary life “with cliffs as home and caves as shelter,” leaving behind many touching tales of struggle.
The high altitude and unique geographical environment have created a high-mountain grassland here, with a climate that is warm in winter and cool in summer—very pleasant. The mountains are covered with lush vegetation, and wildflowers bloom vibrantly in all seasons. Verdant ridges and emerald cliffs stretch as far as the eye can see, while birds and animals thrive in the hills. Throughout the year, one can witness the mountain’s form in spring, its spirit in summer, its emotion in autumn, and its bones in winter. Mists and morning fog drift in and out, creating a fantastical scene reminiscent of a fairyland—evoking Du Fu’s poetic line, “At first it seems like a misty gorge of cloud and water, then suddenly it ends by the Lower Prison.” Standing at the edge of the “Partridge Leaping Frame” cliff, you can listen to a clear stream surging out from the Xiating Valley, its roaring sound like thunder echoing through the sky. Upon ascending to the peak of Jinzhong Mountain, you’ll see several ancient pines growing from crevices in the rocky cliffs, seemingly waving and greeting visitors—strikingly similar to the welcoming pines of Huangshan. The Jinzhongshan Scenic Area not only possesses stunning natural landscapes but is also home to many rare plants and flowers, such as yew trees and wild lychees, making it a prime example of a contemporary multi-element natural scenic area.
The Jinzhongshan Scenic Area is currently under development for local tourism. Starting from Xiaoyang and heading to Shouyang, you can stop by Suoquan Temple along the way, then hike for about two hours to reach Jinzhong Temple. Local three-wheeled motorcycles can also get you there, but the road conditions are quite rough—hiking is recommended. In ancient times, the Jinzhongshan Scenic Area was rarely visited, almost untouched by human footsteps. With numerous waterfalls and peculiar rocks that captivate the eye, and with its wildlife and ecology well preserved, it is an exceptional destination for independent hiking enthusiasts.
