Nixia Pagoda

Nixia Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

Nixia Pagoda is located in Nixia Village, Gantang Town, Fu’an City, and dates back to the Song Dynasty.

Description: Built in the sixth year of the Xining era of the Song Dynasty (1073), it is a solid stone pagoda with a nine-story, octagonal pavilion-style structure, standing 6.85 meters tall in total. The base is a Sumeru pedestal, each side measuring 0.8 meters; each face of every story of the pagoda body features a niche carved with a Buddha statue in relief. The eaves consist of eight sloping roof surfaces and eight pointed ridges, with horizontal holes at the tips of the ridges where wind chimes are hung. The finial consists of seven stacked wheels, topped with an inverted bowl and a gourd-shaped top. The pagoda’s design inherits the style of brick pagodas from the Tang Dynasty and is a valuable physical relic for the study of Southern stone pagoda architecture during the Northern Song Dynasty.

In 2013, Nixia Pagoda was announced by the People’s Government of Fujian Province as part of the eighth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units.
