Wengyao Kiln

The Wengyao Kiln is a cultural relic protection unit of Fu'an City.

The Wengyao Kiln is located in Wengyao Village, Chengyang Town, Fu'an City. Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, it is classified as an ancient site.

It is situated on a hillside 100 meters south of Wengyao Village in Chengyang Town. This kiln is a renowned wengyao in the Fu'an area, originally constructed in the late Ming Dynasty and relocated to its present site during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. It has been repaired throughout various dynasties and remains in active use. The kiln structure and workshop together cover an area of 470 square meters. Both the kiln body and the workshop are relatively well-preserved. The kiln is built along the slope of the hill at an angle of approximately 35°. The kiln structure is made of brick with an arched roof, featuring seven sections with progressively higher rooftops from bottom to top. The kiln is 56 meters long, 2.1 meters wide, with walls 0.24 meters thick, and the firing chamber stands about 1.85 meters high. To the east of the kiln lies the workshop, which is a simple single-story structure with a single-eave, double-slope timber-and-earth roof used for making clay blanks. It houses two original potter’s wheels. The workshop measures 7.42 meters in width and 15.38 meters in depth. The preservation of the entire kiln site to this day is quite rare, and it continues to maintain traditional craftsmanship techniques. It serves as an excellent workshop for studying ancient manual production skills and holds significant value for researching the history of wengyao in our city.

On February 20, 2013, the Fu'an Municipal People's Government designated it as part of the fifth batch of municipal-level cultural relic protection units.

It borders the Fuchun River to the west, stretches from Huajiao in the south to Dongkou and Hutangban in the north, and meets the mountainous regions of Zherong and Xiapu counties to the east. National Highway 104 runs through the town, covering a distance of over 20 kilometers within the jurisdiction, while the town’s ring road totals 48 kilometers in length. The town connects to National Highway 104 from both the north and the south, ensuring highly convenient transportation. The total area of the jurisdiction is 151 square kilometers, including 21,000 mu of arable land—4,000 mu of paddy fields and 17,000 mu of dry land—as well as 150,000 mu of mountainous land.
