Wai Tang Ferry Wharf

The Wai Tang Ferry Wharf is a cultural heritage site protected by Fu’an City.

The Wai Tang Ferry Wharf is located in Wai Tang Village, Gan Tang Town, Fu’an City. Dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is classified as an ancient architectural structure.

It is situated at the warehouse wharf of Wai Tang Village in Gan Tang Town. Initially constructed in the Ming Dynasty and renovated during the Qing Dynasty, there are seven docks located within about 800 meters along the village’s coastal edge in the Wai Tang area. These are the Shang Zheng Ferry Wharf, Chen Cuo Ferry Wharf, Guo Cuo Ferry Wharf, Su Cuo Ferry Wharf, Ren Di Ferry Wharf, Xia Zheng Ferry Wharf, and Ting Jiang Ferry Wharf. The best-preserved one today is the warehouse (grain storage) Su Cuo Wharf. This wharf is laid out facing the river, running in a southeast-northwest direction. Near the riverbank, a short section at the bottom is built with flat, upward-sloping block stones. The steps are constructed from stacked block stones, ascending step by step, with slab stones laid on the tread surfaces. The width of the treads generally ranges from 0.3 to 0.52 meters, with a height of around 0.15 meters, and the total length is about 26 meters. The entire wharf is wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, measuring 4.69 meters at its widest and 3.4 meters at its narrowest. The ferry wharf serves as an important “medium” connecting land and water transportation, holding significant reference value for studying the history of water transport and local culture in Fu’an’s coastal areas. Based on the age of the ancient banyan tree nearby, this wharf has existed for no less than three hundred years.

On February 20, 2013, the Fu’an Municipal People’s Government designated it as a municipal-level cultural heritage site in the fifth batch of such listings.

National Highway 104 and the Ganxia Port Access Road run through the town.
