Shangping Yangkeng Bridge

Shangping Yangkeng Bridge is a cultural heritage site protected by Fu’an City.

Shangping Yangkeng Bridge is located in Shangping Village, Fanjing Township, Fu’an City. Dating back to the seventh year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1868), it is classified as an ancient architectural structure.

The bridge is situated on a stream one kilometer west of Shangping Village in Fanjing Township. Originally constructed in the fifty-sixth year of the Qianlong reign (1791) and rebuilt in the seventh year of the Tongzhi reign (1868), it crosses Yangkeng Stream and runs from north to south. This single-arch wooden covered bridge with a gallery is 24 meters long, 4.8 meters wide, and covers an area of 115.2 square meters. The gallery has nine bays, supported by 40 pillars, and features a post-and-lintel wooden frame with a gable roof. Guardrails are installed along both sides of the bridge, with built-in benches facing inward. The central bay houses a shrine, measuring 2.6 meters in height, 3.2 meters in width, and 0.9 meters in depth. This is one of the more remote covered bridges in our city, and also one of only five such bridges remaining. Due to rapid development in transportation, the mountain paths have largely been abandoned and are rarely used, resulting in the bridge being unattended, unmaintained, and unrepaired, making it highly susceptible to damage and disappearance. Therefore, it is quite precious, and strengthening its protection holds significant value for future research on covered bridges. In 2004, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage protection site.

On February 20, 2013, the People’s Government of Fu’an City announced it as part of the fifth batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units.

Fanjing Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Fu’an City. It was established in 1985 by splitting off from Baishi Town. Located in the northern part of the city, it is 36 kilometers from the municipal government. Covering an area of 54.5 square kilometers, it has a population of 20,000. The township administers 17 village committees: Fanjing, Dun Tou, Ma Gang, Shan Xiu Zhai, Ban Keng, Shang Ping, Ling Xian, Yang Shan, She Tou, Pu Jia Shan, Dong Yang, Xian Yang, Mao Jia Ping, Ba Dou, Gu Ling Zhai, Zhu Bing, and Xu Jia Shan.
