The Niu Shanwan Red Flag Canal is a cultural relic protection unit of Fu’an City.

The Niu Shanwan Red Flag Canal is located in Niu Shanwan Village, Shekou Town, Fu’an City. It was built in 1962 and falls under the category of modern important historical sites and representative buildings.

Located about one kilometer west of Niu Shanwan Village on a mountainside (commonly referred to as the “fort gate area”), it was constructed in 1962. Stretching approximately two kilometers from east to west, the canal was entirely excavated from wild and rugged terrain, covering an area of about 3,100 square meters. The canal winds along the mountain, with steep cliffs and deep ravines to the southeast. Most sections of the canal are built with block stones and cement, while some parts were directly carved from the rock. It is about 0.07–1.5 meters wide and 0.7–1.3 meters deep. Currently, it serves as the water source for the Niu Shanwan Hydropower Station. Due to design and construction errors at the time — the work proceeded from the outside inward (toward the water inlet), resulting in the inner sections of the canal being deeper than the outer ones. Nowadays, it functions not only as an irrigation water source during droughts but also as a hydropower water source. It holds certain reference value for studying the history of modern agricultural development in the city.

On February 20, 2013, the People’s Government of Fu’an City designated it as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit in the fifth batch.

Protected area: The canal is protected within a five-meter extension around its perimeter.

Located in the northwest of the city, it is 15 kilometers from the municipal government. Covering an area of 96 square kilometers with a population of 24,000, Provincial Highway Fenghu Line runs north-south through the town. It administers 24 village committees: Shekou, Xikou, Yanxia, Xiping, Tanyang, Kenglikeng, Shanshan, Niu Shanjie, Licha, Tiandou, Xiufeng, Guiling, Linbing, Shanli, Xielingxia, Panyang, Xianxi, Gongqi, Shaxi, Jiyan, Yanhang, Linghou, Daping, and Ronglingtou.
