Ancient Kiln Site at Bowldish Mound

The Wanquan Bowldish Mound Kiln Site is located in Zhuzhou Village, Wanquan Township, centered around Bowldish Mound, with kiln sites distributed across three surrounding hillsides. The products include celadon, bluish-white porcelain, and brown-glazed porcelain. The majority of the items are bowls, along with some small high-footed cups, dishes, saucers, water droppers, ewers, bottles, and grain storage jars. There are slight differences in products from different kiln sites. In 2016, archaeological excavations uncovered three kiln remains, one of which was a compartmentalized dragon kiln—the first such discovery in the Sanming area. The Bowldish Mound kiln site began production in the mid-to-late Northern Song Dynasty, flourished during the Southern Song Dynasty, featured a large distribution area, thick accumulation layers, a rich variety of product types and shapes, lustrous glazes, and exquisite craftsmanship. The discovery of the compartmentalized dragon kiln is of great significance for studying the origin and spread of this type of kiln technology.
