Former Residence Site of Zhu De

The former residence site of Zhu De is located at No. 1, Binhe North Road, Guyong Town, Jiangle County.

On February 9, 1934, Zhu De led the main forces of the Red Army from Taining to Jiangle in person to guide the revolutionary struggle and stayed in a building on the left side of the Catholic Church at Shuimen in the county town. During his stay, he personally drafted a proclamation stating: The Red Army is the people’s army, fighting for the interests of the broad toiling masses; all shops in the town, as long as they are not owned by capitalists, will be protected and must operate as usual; the Red Army has strict discipline and will not take even a needle or thread from the people, hoping that the local populace will warmly support the Red Army and bravely volunteer to join the army and fight; overthrow the armies oppressing the people, and suppress all elements persistently undermining the Soviet government and the interests of the people... After the proclamation was posted, it received enthusiastic support from people of all walks of life in Jiangle. Zhu De stayed in the county town for three days, assisting the local Soviet regime in formulating a series of guidelines, policies, and work plans for the revolutionary struggle.

The former residence site of Zhu De was originally the priests' dormitory building of the Shuimen Church in the county town, built in the 21st year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1895) by the Spanish missionary Nan Nannangen. Facing south, it consists of two buildings: one for the priests and one for the nuns, covering a total area of over 1,000 square meters with a floor space of 1,058 square meters. The church was constructed in a Western architectural style, featuring a two-story brick-and-wood structure with semicircular arches above the door and window openings. There is an open space between the two buildings. In 1950, it was converted into the office and accommodation site for the Jiangle County Committee of the Communist Party of China; in 1970, it became the guesthouse of the Jiangle County Revolutionary Committee; and in the 1990s, it was demolished. Part of the original foundation was rebuilt as the Welcome Building of Yuhua Hotel, while another part was turned into green space.

Guyong Town: Located in the central part of Jiangle County, Guyong Town is the political, economic, cultural, and transportation hub of the county, covering a total area of 220 square kilometers. The town government is situated on the north bank of the Jinxi River in the county town and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Jiangle County.

In the third year of Tiande during the Min Kingdom of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (964 AD), when Jiangle was elevated from a county to a prefecture, there was Xitai Mountain in the western suburbs of the county town, which resembled an inverted bell, hence the name “Yongzhou.” It was later renamed “Guyong” due to its long history.
