Former Site of the Guerrilla Activities of the Independent Division of Northern Fujian

The former site of the guerrilla activities of the Independent Division of Northern Fujian is a classic red tourism destination.

The Puzhao Temple at the former site of the guerrilla activities of the Independent Division of Northern Fujian is located on Jiuxian Mountain near Xinlu Village, Guyong Town, Jiangle County.

In early March 1937, Ma Changyan and Huang Ligui led parts of the 2nd Column and the 5th Column of the Independent Division of the Red Army in Northern Fujian to rendezvous in the Jiangle–Taining–Jianning guerrilla base. To adapt to the needs of the struggle, Commander Huang Ligui decided to merge the 5th and 6th Columns into the new 6th Column, with Huang Ligui also serving as commander of the 2nd Column and Ma Changyan appointed as political commissar of the 6th Column. They maintained their focus on Jiangle, continuing operations in the Jiangle–Taining–Jianning guerrilla base. After entering Zhengxi and Kongping villages in Jiangle, the 6th Column joined forces with the guerrilla unit led by Qiu Ziming, Secretary of the CPC Jiangle–Tao–Shao Central County Committee, and set up camp at Puzhao Temple on Jiuxian Mountain. Together with local Party organizations, they suppressed reactionary elements and developed guerrilla forces in Wan’an and Anren. By the end of June, when the Kuomintang authorities discovered that the Red Army guerrillas were active in Wan’an, Anren, and Dayuan, they immediately deployed the 7th Division, the 12th Division, and security forces from Shaowu and Jiangle. These troops attacked the guerrilla base on Jiuxian Mountain from three directions—Qiaotou in Shaowu, and Gaotang and Wan’an in Jiangle—encircling the 2nd Column under Huang Ligui, the 6th Column under Ma Changyan, and accompanying members of the CPC Jiangle County Committee and CPC Jianning–Taining County Committee on Jiuxian Mountain. After more than a month of arduous fighting, the guerrillas finally broke through the encirclement and left Jiangle.

Puzhao Temple at the former site of the guerrilla activities of the Independent Division of Northern Fujian, also known as Jiuxian Wanyuan Nunnery, was first built in the fifth year of the Shaoding era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1232), with its grounds later expanded to cover 4.5 mu. It includes upper, middle, and lower halls, as well as a bell tower, drum tower, monks’ quarters, dining hall, and incense-burning terrace. The “Jiuxian Snow Clearing” scenic view on Jiuxian Mountain is one of the ancient Eight Scenic Spots of Jiangle.
