Dakou Kiln Site

The Dakou Kiln Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The Dakou Kiln Site is located in Huangbi Village, Shuibei Street Town, Pucheng County, Fujian Province. The village consists of an upper and a lower section, with the upper section being the natural village of Dakou. The kiln site is situated on the hillside behind the village. The hill is long and narrow. Due to its proximity to the village, a small number of civilian houses were built on the waste kiln deposits in the early years after liberation, causing damage to the southern edge of the kiln site. The rest is well-preserved, rich in content, and covered with thatch and underbrush. The area where porcelain fragments are piled up stretches approximately 1,000 meters from east to west and 50 meters from north to south. Cross-sections reveal that the thickest part of the deposit reaches 1–6 meters, containing a large number of kiln tools and ceramic fragments.

Historically, it was said that there were thirty-six kilns, and the village was named after them, covering an area of over 10,000 square meters. The main products were celadon-glazed ware, along with some green-glazed items. The kiln produced a wide variety of items, ranging from daily-use tableware such as bowls, plates, dishes, pots, and jars, to women’s cosmetic containers like powder boxes, as well as everyday items like oil lamps and incense burners. It also manufactured sculpted toys, stationery such as small water droppers, and specialized funerary objects like lidded bottles. The production range was extensive, meeting various needs of the general populace — a rarity among ancient kilns in our province. The decoration of the ceramics mainly featured stamping, followed by carving. Kiln tools included support rings, stands, and saggars. Firing methods involved various techniques such as support-ring over-firing, stand stacking, and sagger upright firing.

Dakou Kiln was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage protection unit.
