Jincheng Ruins

The Jincheng Ruins are a protected cultural heritage site of Fujian Province.

The ruins are located in Jincheng Village, Linjiang Town, Pucheng County. The site borders Linjiang Stream to the east, leans against Jinqi Mountain to the west, faces an open basin to the south, and is adjacent to Jishan Ridge to the north, covering an area of over 200,000 square meters. Starting from September 8, 2003, two archaeological teams—one from the Fujian Provincial Museum and the other from the Fujian Minyue King City Museum—discovered the remains of a building dating back to the Qin and Han dynasties and more than 20 Han Dynasty tombs.

The Qin-Han architectural ruins are situated on the hill above Jincheng, covering an area of 406 square meters. Thousands of tile fragments were found here, including both pan tiles and flat tiles, each measuring 35 cm in length and width and 10 mm in thickness, with inscriptions in Chinese characters as well as undecipherable scripts. This small section of the ruins is relatively well-preserved, with the layout of the tiles still reflecting their original arrangement, as if they were still covering a roof. On the open ground to the east, there remains a dam-like earthen mound, commonly referred to as the “city wall.” Built from rammed earth, it stretches 30 meters in length and 3 meters in width, representing a remnant of the ancient city wall. On the inner side of the wall, a damaged tile end was discovered—only half of it remains—bearing the carved characters “央” (yang) and “阳” (yang) on the left and right respectively. It is inferred that this was part of a tile end inscribed with “Han Yang Wei Yang” (汉阳未央).

Not far from the ruins, on Jinqi Mountain, two adjacent Han Dynasty tombs—one larger and one smaller—were excavated. Tomb M1 has a chamber measuring 6 meters in length, 4 meters in width, and 3.5 meters in depth; its ramp measures 15 meters in length and 2 meters in width. Ten artifacts were unearthed, including a Han Dynasty gourd-shaped pot, pottery jars, and double-handled pottery urns. Tomb M2 has a chamber measuring 8 meters in length, 4 meters in width, and 5 meters in depth; its ramp measures 18 meters in length and 2 meters in width. Over 50 artifacts were excavated, including jade objects and pottery, among which are three jade bi discs, one jade pendant, and three pottery bi discs. The largest jade bi disc is 33 cm in diameter (severely damaged), while another celadon jade bi disc, 27 cm in diameter and well-preserved, is hailed as the “No. 1 Jade Bi of Fujian.” The jade pendant was found broken into over ten small fragments, marking the first such discovery in Fujian’s Han-era archaeology. Also uncovered were sets of standard pottery items, among which five pottery ding tripods indicate that the tomb owner held a rank above that of a senior official.

The Jincheng Ruins have been designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage protection site.

Jincheng Village: Located beside National Highway 205, approximately 2 kilometers southeast of Linjiang Town, Jincheng Village comprises 18 villager groups, with 510 households and a population of 2,100. The village has a two-committee team of 5 cadres and 46 Party members. The village encompasses 3,340 mu of arable land, 5,818 mu of hilly land, 200 mu of tea plantations, and 500 mu of Osmanthus trees. Currently, there are three tea and fruit farms, three pig farms, and two duck farms within the area. In 2012, the village’s total social output value reached 16.98 million yuan, with an average per capita income of 7,940 yuan for farmers.
